i need to sort some brakes out at some point and i was thinking of making up my own big brake kit.
i know a guy who does skyline kits and he can get hold of large brake disks off brembo so i was thinking maybe so
345mm drilled/grooved disks
willwood or maybe exotic ca calipers i.e something like 996 turbo calipers what i can get
braided lines cutom made by a loacal firm
decent pads like either 2500's or something form ap racing range or even mintex 1144 pads.
what do you guys think about this and has anyone done it?

its a no go with standard wheels! with 345mm discs you will need 18's and if you want 330mm disc would fit under 17's
i will try and look

There have been a number of big brake conversions over the years using Porsche 996, Ferrari F40 and custom kits like Si. Of course you can upgrade the standard kit too which can achieve some significant results. It's interesting to know that the Coupe uses the same setup as the early Dodge Vipers.

330mm can be had off the shelf. Alfa GTA discs and calipers. Calipers bolt up as standard and the 330mm discs are floating, so can be swapped for a 4 stud arrangement.

Or even more simply, just get a set of Alfa standard/3g/DBA discs drilled to suit the coupe CPD.

oh that sounds easier and cheaper :-) i might look into that.
i take it with the gta discs you would have to make up a bracket to move the caliper out?

Nope, everything comes with the alfa caliper kit to fit the coupe, as the alfa's were killing the 305mm discs, so were upgraded to 330mm and the calipers moved out to suit. This is a direct bolt on the coupe hub

The calipers are quite cheap too, £230 per side I think (there or there abouts).

It seems to me that you'd be better off developing improved cooling to the brakes. Nigel started to have a look into this a few months back here but nothing came of it.

A set of those Alfa jobs with 330mm discs and improved cooling via some form of ducting diverting a channel of cool air to the inside of the discs would likely yield much better results than simply fitting huge discs \:\)

The bigger Alfa calipers dont suffer from overheating as much as the standard size ones do. That's why Alfa changed to the bigger calipers on the GTA's from a start point of having exactly the same ones the coupe does.

begbie, am i reading this right? the 330mm alfa GTA calipers and discs are a direct bolt-on to the coupe 20VT? even the disc offset is correct, it will clear the coupe hub?

if that's true im gonna start saving...

Discs will need redrilled as they are 5 x 98 PCD but otherwise everything just bolts on. Need 17" wheels too.

the beauty of it is that i already have a 5x98 hub conversion and the wheels are already 17" (brought over from my old 156 which had 330mm brake conversion \:D )

time to start saving! \:\)

Ran the 330's on a track day, and didn't notice them fading. Doubt you would get fade on the road unless you were really going for it...

Nice bits of kit \:\)

Can anyone provide part numbers for the kit? or the parts that make it up please. Would like to check locally but Part numbers will make it alot easier.

GTA Calipers 77362677 & 77362676
330mm Disc's 51733051

Only just read this - you really need to be thinking of upgrading the rears as the back of the standard car gets light under heavy braking (even with the brake compensator working properly), making the front stronger will only make that worse.

330's up front is more than enough IMO. The issue with the brakes getting too hot is down to the weight of the car making the standard discs work very hard. With two piece vented discs with a larger surface area I have had no issues with fade.

I use a solid disc at the rear with an Audi TT caliper - it's nice to have a handbrake too:

http://www.compbrake.co.uk/Fiat%2020V%20Coupe%20Front.htm

The pics are from my car - I helped them develop the kit from scratch. Dont expact the kit to be plug and play, you will have to get lines made up to fit. \:\) I bought a bias valve, but with both the front and rear kit fitted I dont think you need it.
