I'm picking up a drilled box and k&n tomorrow.
But it seems I have bigger issues with over boosting to worry about before as I found out last night when I blew the intercooler apart on the m40

But it seems I have bigger issues with over boosting to worry about before as I found out last night when I blew the intercooler apart on the m40 I doubt that is down to boost unless you are either running a stock IC with plastic end caps, or a very poorly made aftermarket one. Are you sure it blew apart rather than just leaking a bit?

It is a standard ic with plastic ends. I've driven a fair few of these coupes and I've never had a standard one that pulls like this.
Oh yeh she defiantly blew apart with a massive pop then died. Unplug the air mass and job done she runs again (not greatly but it got me home with calling the rac)lol

I don't yet as I've only just got the car last weekend but I'm going to temp fit one tomorrow once I've got the ic fitted. I'm guessing it will have about 2bar

If it's a standard turbo it should not be at 2 bar, that's recipe for disaster! From memory the standard turbo should run 1.0 bar at full boost, it may spike higher than that, but should be stable at 1 bar. There's a chance your boost is fluctuating which is the EBV not working as it should. The simple solution is replace it with a manual boost controller, or electronic boost controller, or if you can find one a replacement.
The max that is recommended on a standard turbo is a stable 1.2 bar with a GTEC 1, or possibly a touch more with a live map e.g. FC Performance.

Everything about the car is standard. The turbo looks quite new but I don't think it's a non standard one. I have loads of history with the car and nothing says about a new turbo. I'll have to see what it's boosts at tomorrow with the new ic.
Ebv? Electronic boost valve?

It's in front of the battery and yes a mbv can be installed but you need a boost gauge to set it up so that you can see what boost it's set too .

I've got a boost gauge to see what pressure it's running. I'll have a play once I've fitted the ic and see what I can find
Thanks for all your help I'll keep you updated

Reading this thread I am not sure that you have "got" the noise hierarchy:
Std box Std box with K&N filter Drilled airbox K&N cone filter K&N Cone filer + SIP
If you want induction roar noise go for the K&N Cone filter and don't faff around with airboxes.

Some years ago I came across a double mushroom induction pipe I had in my shed from the days I used dabble about on other cars I wondered for the hell of it how it would sound on the Coop. Those days were really long gone for me but the noise was pretty spectacular. In the end I took it off as it played havoc with the maf, & readings on the widget confirmed this.
I'm an old git & happy with it,most of the time

I've fitted the drilled box and new ic and she goes how she should. When I picked up the ic from mario he pointed out the ebv and noticed the pipe was off so I put it back on when I fitted the ic and she's all good :-)
This weeks job is to fit a boost gauge and a mbv to week the boost up very slightly
With the drilled box I get lovely induction noise which is what I was after. When I get tuning it properly I might go for a cone filter but for know I'm happy with the drilled box and k&n

I may have to invest in one at the end of the month. What other mods can be done with the gtec 1?
