Fuel meter needle 'stuck' after wire-mod? #933346

Hi everyone,

I have done the wire-mod some days ago for my fuel pump. Now this was the very first time that i touched something electronic, so it took me some time to understand what i was doing. I was relieved that the car started up right the first time, and that the RR results showed a good a/f ratio.

But, ever since i was done with the modification, the fuel meter needle kept showing 3/4 full. Even after 150 miles...

Right now it is still stuck on start up (it does go to E when i turn off the ignition) I did cut the blue and green wire's loose from eachother, but re-assembled them later. (there are four wires coming out of the loom: red+black and purple+green both going to a different plug)

What have i done?

(maybe this is one of the things that i shouldve outsourced...)

Hi Mart

You got that guide I sent you?

I think, if the car is running, you are likely shorting out the fuel sensor in the tank somehow

The 2 wire to the top of the tank that aren't for the pump, are you sure they are not touching? or the positive is earthing somehow?

It will be something around there.

The other possiblity is that you have wired it up wrong and have the pump earthing through the guage wiring and the gauge earthing through the fuel pump relay.

That guide I sent you has the correct wiring colours

As an alternate thought, did you say the gauge still shows the same when the car is off?

The gauge could be stuck confused

My oil pressure gauge sometimes get's stuck when I switch the engine off. I assume it got some dirt or something in there which needs cleaning out, but it doesn't bother me enough to do it.

thanks paul, i will look into that.

The needle is not stuck mechanically i think because when i turn off the ignition it drops to E like it should, and on startup it does go back to that 3/4. I will recheck the guide.

OK, wait a minute.

Which of the 2 plugs is for the fuel pump, and which of the 2 for the meter?

There is one round plug with black/red wires
There is one oval plug with green/purple wires

I have connected the black/red to the relay, the green/purle is not connected to the relay and has a straight connecttion from the loom to the plug on top of the pump...

EDIT:

Should i have wired that one on to the relay?

Yes, that plug in the first pic, but the colours are different or us, (with 16vt's) as per the guide. Did you cut the other smaller plug?

If you did that is the sender unit plug

Cheers

haha.... Do you get my email or messages by the way saint?

But..the rr results showed a good, even little rich air fuel ratio. Should i still do the wire mod then?

The wires of the fuel gauge might have touched eachother from what i remember. Can this be the reason why it is stuck..and how shouls i fix this? Is there a fuse for this?

Hi

No emails or messages sorry, I'm away this weekend though

Maybe you have cut the wrong wires and the pump wiring is as OE but without seeing it I don't know, the wiring mod is still a good to go at some stage
