My rebuilt engine didn't have forged parts but some of this thread may still be useful smile

Ex 20VT - now something far more sensible'ish... smile

I'm in the process of fitting and running my engine which was built with forged interals from Barbz.

Barbz advised me to run the first 1,000 kms with mineral oil, RPM shall not go above 3,000 and boost shall be minimal or base boost.

After the first 1,000 kms, oil shall be replaced with synthetic and run higher revs and boost gradually.

In general and for any new / built engine, you should vary the RPM during the initial period.

Good luck smile

This is how i done mine.

Most of the running in is done within the first 20 miles shocked . Only use mineral oil for no more than 50miles as it cokes up. After 50 miles change to semi (and filter) and do a further 250 miles, then change to fully (and filter) and do another 250 miles.

The engine must be up to operating temperate before being driven. Makes sure you load up the rings with boost but do not go past 4000rpm, makes sure the engine brakes as well. Do not start your engine unless you are ready to drive it. Don’t start just to show your friends then switch off. Do not think that driving on the motorway for 500 miles will run in your engine. Do not drive like a granny or nutter this is the worst thing you can do.

So for example; Set boost to 0.8/1 Bar, Drive on an nice road at 30 MPH in 3rd/4th gear then WOT let is load up unto you reach 4000rpm then lift off the throttle and let the engine break, repeat this driving style unto you first oil change. After first oil change just drive normally without hitting excessive rpm.

Is it important 2 use that mineral oil, or can we just go straight 2 the semi or fully synthetic, and change after how ever many miles?

It's important to run a mineral oil to start with as modern semi synthetic oil tend to create a oil barrier between the rings and bore, that great for low wear but you need to get the high spots worked down asap hence the need for mineral oil, there are other reason and many complicated explanations on top of this but this is the main reason
