I hope no one is going to be tempted to take up the govt offer to scrap their coupe for a new car. Wont make economic sense as v unlikely to replace with as nice a car and the coupe is no old banger :-)

We are thinking of taking up the Scrap offer and went to chat to the dealers yesterday.

We have an eye on a Grande Punto GP, but the Fiat dealer did not seem keen to sell us one rolleyes They would also only offer the £2000 discount off the RRP crazy

We then visited Ford to take a look at the new KA & Fiesta. They had a discount list in the showroom showing the discounts from RRP that they were already offering. The £2000 govt scheme would be applied on top of these discounts shocked We could have had a brand new (unregistered) KA with A/C, Bluetooth, USB, Alloys and metalic paint for well under £6000 OTR shocked

I thought thats what some dealers would do, i.e any discounts available disappear as soon as you tell them you have an older car to trade in.

A friend at work said you need to go in there, negotiate a discount as you would on any new car, and then hit them right at the end, and tell them you have an older car to trade in. Be interesting to try it, however I can't find any car I'd fancy new at the moment, still too many good secondhand cars around smile

My understanding is you need to have owned the car for one year, it must have been registered before 1999, and the scheme only runs for one year for the first 300000 people. Clever move by the government to stop people buying bangers just to get a discount though. However as I mentioned above I have a real suspicion most dealers will just eliminate the discount people could get by haggling and apply this instead frown
