If you have just bought your coupe or other car I have just had an interesting site pointed out to me that shows you the MOT history of your car provided you have the current V5 and it's reg number you can look at all it's past passes and fails and any advisories that were given before you bought the car.

I have just found out that my car was sold to me despite the fact the the maindealer I bought it from knew of 3 serious issues as stated in the MOT documentation they never fixed them or made me aware they were also not declare don their pre sales delivery inspection sheet which is a Volvo approved document.

Mine has failed twice on this:

Rear brake load sensing valve linkage seized (3.6.F.3)

I will check it more thoroughly before the next one or better still get a new one.

It also failed on this before I got it:

Nearside Rear all direction indicators incorrect colour (1.5.A1d)
Offside Rear all direction indicators incorrect colour (1.5.A1d)

Well one of my ones was as follows. Note the test station name \:o panic......

Date of test: 30/05/2006
Certificate issued (Pass)
Odometer reading: 84,646 Miles
Test number: 491120556199
Test station name: MOTOR SALVAGE
Test station number: 24032
Test station telephone number: 02089807067
Test class: IV
Test expiry date: 29/05/2007
No Advisory Notice issued

I panicked and looked through the old MOT's. Now that is an inappropriate name for an MOT test station \:\)

I spoke to the dealer principal at Volvo Leeds today and he confirmed it is not company policy to issue a new customer the advisories that accompany an mot when they purchase a second hand car from them. I ranted at him that the only reason not to do so was to withold information and to save them money having to complete the work themselves as if I was aware of these potential faults at the time of purchase they would have done the work or lost the sale.

I now have a free MOT and the offer of anywork that needs doing being completed FOC.

I am pushing for more as one of the items was a punctured tyre a potential life threatening item.

All looks good for the SLK - failed on some tyres last year, but now four new looking premiums. Advisory on a rear brake pad as well, but not noted this year. I assume a look at receipts will show replacement \:\)

Daft girl question (not that my bro knows either) - do the rear pads on a RWD car like the SLK take as much of a hammering as the front pads on a FWD car like the coupe? \:\?

No is the quick answer, the front brakes do most of the work on any car.

Good info and definately worth a check before buying a car, only goes back to July 2006 for me though ?

Mine failed last MOT Jul/Aug07

Reason(s) for refusal to issue Certificate Offside Rear registration plate lamp not working (1.1.5c)
Nearside rear parking brake recording little or no effort (3.7.A.7a)
Parking brake efficiency below requirements (3.7.A.9/10)
Advisory Notice issued
Front manifold exhaust system has a minor leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2a)
Nearside Front brake disc slightly worn (3.5.1h)
Offside Front brake disc slightly worn (3.5.1h)
Nearside Front brake disc slightly pitted (3.5.1h)
Offside Front brake disc slightly pitted (3.5.1h)
Nearside Rear brake disc slightly pitted (3.5.1h)
Offside Rear brake disc slightly pitted (3.5.1h)
Nearside Front tyre worn close to the legal limit (4.1.D.1)
Noise on engine
Lift in o/s steering rack

then passed

Advisory Notice issued
Slight blow from exhaust manifold
Slight lift in offside steering rack
Both fron brake discs slightly worn and slightly pitted
Both rear brake discs slightly pitted
Slight bind on nearside front brake

then I bought it a week later.

'noise from engine' was probably the bottom pulley that I replaced.
'Slight bind on nearside front brake' is now sorted except for slight squeal, probably new discs needed. Looking back I'm very surprised they never picked up the very worn & corroded brake pads, glad I checked them when I got it.
Manifold & Discs are on the list, getting done very soon.

Anyone know what 'slight lift in offside steering rack' means

James Twist are fairly well regarded on here I think.

Your Coupe has had quite a bit of work to bring it up to scratch.

I think the MOT history tells you quite a lot about the previous owners attitude to maintenance.

Hmmm, there's something very strange going on in that history Clay. On the 6th June 2006 it fails on a huge list of items. One week later it's taken to a different garage and it fails on the same things on the list but now the list is shorter \:\?

You almost get the impression that either the owner fixed some faults and bodged others hoping they'd get it through un-noticed, which didn't work or they shopped around for another garage to do the MOT......

Weird but interesting.

Oh, the reason why the history will be short (a couple of years) is because it only covers computerised MOT certificates.

Has it had some welding to fix the mounting points? it sounds quite strange.
