In July I was 22 with 1 year driving experience, 1 year NCB, I insured my 280 bhp coupe for £1200 with adrian flux. £2000+ still sounds too much to me.

i'm 25 and i am paying £1400 tpft on a modded 20vt and it's my first car i have driven on a full license!!! my gt4 (380bhp) was £1200 tpft on L plates at the age of 22. unless you have loads of points, have motor related convictions or your middle name is sucker, then your still paying over the odds in my book mate

Why on earth would people have a car that costs nearly as much to insure for one year as it is worth? Try Flux, Greenlight and Noel Dazely...oh and move to the Outer Hebrides for a low risk postcode

Yes indeed, they are. Surely better to have an small car, build up some NCB. I'm not sure a 20vt coupe is sensible as a new driver If you can afford it, fine as it's your money, but remember if, God forbid, you write off the car, you may well find yourself out of pocket!

But is it not alarming to pay £2200 for insurance (and presumably even more in installments) from taxed income (so ~£3.5k or more of gross)

My first car cost me £2,000 to insure and that was an Orion 1.6 that cost me £2,500 As for a first car as a coupe, probably not the best, but my first car had 120 bhp, which for 14 years ago was alot, and I didn't crash that, it wasn't until I had half that power that I crashed At 18, 19, 20 or whatever, all I remember was wanting to have the best car at School, college, work, etc - so owning a coop is spot on

Shoes aren't my thing, but I do like exotic holidays ... ~£1700 will pay for my 2 weeks in Thailand and I can also insure the coupe and have change from £2200

Shop around is my advise, do the main insurance comparison sites. Don't take out their breakdown cover (usually around £80-90), and pay in one lump sum. Just paying one lump sum saves about £100.0 on interest. I've had mine down from £519 to £336.00 this year Another trick, take out a 0% credit Card, pay insuarance in full using this card, and then just pay the card off monthly..

My advice is don't waste your time with web-sites like Confused.com. My experience has been that they often give you a distorted picture of who's charging what.
Unfortunately there's no substitute for doing the leg work and getting quotes from as many places as possible.
All insurance companies want to insure somebody who is 30-60 with plenty of NCB, married with kids and a mortgage, driving a middle of the road family runaround and living in the leafy suburbs. The really big insurers have got the clout to take almost only those people and put their prices for everybody else high enough that they're not competitive. I'd be surprised if Swinton didn't fall in to that category.
Dear monos, a secret truth.
