is it possible to fit 6x9s where the stock rear speakers are? i'd like to use the stock location to keep the install clean.

also thinking of installing an aftermarket alarm - probably a clifford or cobra system - for remote locking features. any watchouts i need to know about?

If you are talking about the rear speakers then no you cant (hold on a moment though) as they are fitted to the rear cards rather than then the metal of the car.

However you can easily fit a set of 6x9 into the holes in the rear of the car. Just screw them into metal or mount them on MDF and mount them on the metal.

People on here have fitted both 6 X 9's and even subwoofers in the rear. As Sugarbear says, you may need to use MDF spacers / mountings etc but it can be done.

You *dont* need spacers but it helps to secure them to the metal in the back.

Even with spacers there is tons of room in the back for them. Fit them in the bottom hole at 45 degrees and then drill/screw them to the metal or else fit them to MDF (should help with vibration) and then to the metal. I am making some mdf spaces up this weekend so will try to get the shape required into a word/pdf template if I can.

And finally, I think its a good idea to cut away the moulding (rear side of door card) for the old speakers on the rear door cards. Helps with the sound.

maybe a dumb question, but what are "MDF spacers"?

we have decent ICE installers here. im sure it will be no probs to make up mounts for the 6x9s, as long as there's space back there.

Do you have MDF in malaysia ? Basically wood fibre mixed in with some horrible glue then compressed.

You must have it. what the spacers/mounts do is to position the speakers away from the surface of the metal. Basically you would need a couple of A4 size bits of solid wood then mount the speakers onto it and then then screw the wood to the metal of the rear quarter. easy peasy.

Thinking about this you may want to have some spaces to direct the speakers "up", I will have a play when I get the time.

no MDF here i think. we mostly use plywood, but i could always dynamat it.

The best advice I can give for anyone who's planning to fit speakers to the metal section behind the rear 3/4 panel, is to definately use a nice chunky piece of MDF to both cover the hole and mount the speaker on (whatever the size). I'd also recommend beefing up the sound deadening on the inside of the outer panel (i.e. where the back of the pininfarina badge sits), and also to at least cover the other 2 holes in the panel with sound deadening material (the 2 open holes above the hole you use to mount the speaker on the MDF).

Whilst this will not create a perfect enclosure, it will act as a "light" enclosure, and will give better low end response.

Mounting to MDF will create the biggest difference, simply by screwing to a flexing metal panel, with a gaping gap around the speaker basket will not give a very good sound.

Personally, I use the front stock location for a set of decent 6.5" components, with tweeters mounted in the grills, and use the rear section for some extra low end response. I have a set of KEF 6x9" midbass drivers which I was planning to mount on an MDF panel in the location being discussed in this thread, but haven't had time to do it. I've currently got some 6.5" drivers in the rear, and they do a good job of providing some bass - although the KEF drivers should sound great. I'd recomment not using a full range 6x9" in those locations though - you're probably better off mounting 6.5" coax's to the stock panels, as this will give a much better soundstage overall in the back (if that's what you want to achieve) - compared to mounting 6x9's in the metal panel.

Sorry to necro this old post but this is relevant, i was thinking about fitting 6x9's directly onto the rear cards in the same spot as the original speakers, obviously not the most elegant solution but certainly easier than behind, can anyone see any reason why this is a bad idea? i only want the 6x9's for a bit of extra kick.

you must be mad no point in fitting them if you attach them to the cardboard panel. You have to take the card of and if you are doing that it is easier to fit them to the metal. I wedged them at first so I did not need an MDF panel. You could do the same.

Well i don't see any problems mounting speekers directly to the panel as long as they are well secured with a good air cavity seal.
I had a look and the spot i wanted too fit the speakers but it is far smaller than i remembered so i am not going to bother with that idea anymore, whats the actual size of the rear speakers btw?

The rear speakers are tiny. Just get some 6x9s or 17cm ones ans fit them top the metal behind the panel. Just don't attach anything to the card as it will sound rubbish.

What sort of sound deadening did you use Bockers? It doesn't look like dynamat, so was just wondering if it was A) Just as good (which I bet it is) and B) How much roughly did it cost adn where from?

Only asking as I have just bought me a very nice pair of 6x9s, dirt cheap but sound awesome in my mate's Laguna.

I think I bought 30sq mtrs and have load left still. Have the roof still to do as that is very tinny and resonant.
