I moved from street parking on the scummiest unlit pot-holed crime infested side street in HD1 group D to being garaged in a brand new housing development in a really nice area, HD2 group E

Spoke to an insurer a while long time ago about this. If you live in a affluent (Posh) area that is situated close to a not so affluent area (Sh*t hole) then you are a higher risk then the not so affluent area! e.g Burnham in slough is reasonably affluent but next to the britwell estate, a very rough estate that is policed 24 hours and has CCTV on towers!

I moved from LE12 which is group B to PA1 which is "refer" and my insurance went down.

Even though insurance companies use lots of complicated calculations incorporating hundreds of factors to come up with a premium I still convinced that the calculations start along the lines of:

Think of a random number between 1-1000. If the applicant is under the age of 25 then double it, if the applicant is under the age of 20 then add a zero to the end.

I'm thinking 'refer' may refer to postcodes with wildly contrasting neighbourhoods. I live in N7 which is 'refer' but can change between very dodgy and very desirable - so they go on the second part of the postcode which gives a more accurate assessment.

I was a F* then moved to an E*, though insurance was still only £570 fully comp on the plus, with the o/h on the policy too. Not bad

No, that's fraudulent if the car isn't there most of the time. If you are considering that, why not go the next step to save money, so to 'fronting' and have your mother/father/girlfriend/boyfriend/uncle John as the main driver even though it's your car that you own and drive

If the car is registered in their name then it'll be fine. A slight fiddle - and if you need to claim just remember the address where the car is kept.

I'd only say that this list will not be used by more than one insurer (if at all any insurer currently uses it), and that postcode rating for Motor is becoming increasingly granular, i.e. depending on who insures you - they may have different rates for all the streets in a postcode area. I was speaking to some actuaries 2 days ago who were telling me that some personal lines classes have granular rates down to individual properties in some cases. Hence I would assume this list is also fairly old.

Also, a lot of the reasons behind why certain postcodes have a certain risk attached to them will not make intuitive sense, and could be because of factors outside of where you live, for example: due to drivers in the area being susseptable to higher frequency/severity of claims whilst driving on the roads, which is obviously indirectly linked to where you live.

An example of 2 different areas: 1) poor neighbourhood may have a high frequency of claims due to vandelism/theft and average claims due to driving related accidents, but claims have low severity as the cars are low value and a higher proportion are insured TPFT, whilst: 2) a rich neighbourhood may have a high frequency of claims due to bad driving, and a low frequency due to vandelism/theft, but the claims have high severity (as the cars are worth more, hence cost more to repair/replace etc...), and due to the high vehicle value, most policies are Fully Comp. Which would you rate higher risk? If an area is both affluent and high risk due to vandelism/theft and the driving is hectic also (e.g. centre of large cities, especially London) these will also be obviously rated the highest risk.

Insurers review their rates on personal lines classes very regularly, which is why you will always find disparities between who is competitive year on year when getting quotes for your car. It's not true to think that just because a company was expensive one year, they will be this year. Although, usually rates are only adjusted slightly - if an insurer is being aggressive in one area e.g. if they find a segment that is very profitable (e.g. Postcode area BN12, or a car like a MG Rover ZS) then they may drop their rates harder, and prices could vary vastly if your insurance profile fits to their rate drops.

I Underwrite and price a corporate class insurance, and some new business cases that I saw had dropped by more than half the figure we quoted them last year, due to the rate changes I recently pushed through.

Having a different address to the address you live at on your insurance is a great idea also, except for the fact that if your car gets stolen/damaged/vandelised outside your house, and you report it as such (say it's got 4 flat tyres and it's immobile, or it's been smashed up and is undrivable), then if you can't prove that you live at your parents house (if they ask for proof, which they can) - you will get shafted. It's a risk, and they may not ask, but for the sake of a few hundred pounds at most I'd say be straight with them.

What amazes me is that Milton Keynes is considered low risk, given what I've seen in the 'vs' section
