Hi all, just got a quote on a set of 17" azev A's and was quoted 225/45/17. They have told me they can do a 40 profile on those wheels too 215/40/17 but they said its not right for the car, what i was wondering is what other people are using size wise on 8x17" rims?.
i would rather have the lower profile because i think it will look allot better but not if its unsafe(load rating and stuff). would be happy if some peeps could post some pictures of there cars with 17" wheels on and weather or not they have it lowered aswell. and what size tire they are using, does a 45 profile look odd? And is there problems with 18" on a coupe? any help would be great.

cheers guys.

45 is the correct profile for 17" wheels - 40 for 18" wheels.

I had 17s on my coupe, lowered by 40mm and had 40 profile tyres - bottomed out, caught the bumper etc... Should have had 45 profile and things wouldnt have been so bad. Cant remember the width though sorry.

I also had 18s on the car with 225/40 profile, again lowered, no problems apart from light scrubbing on the wheel arch liner on full lock - nothing to worry about.

What coupe have you got 16/20/20vt?

18s had 225/40/18 - wheels are 7x18 not 8x18, dont know if that will influence the tyre width choice, shape of tyre etc... but you should check this with whoever you are buying them from.

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i25/MARK20V/FIATCOUPE1.jpg

IMHO 18s are a must, 17s too small. Must lower it too to fill the arches nicely - makes such a difference.

Make sure the wheels will clear the front calipers on the turbo version though - the pcd is 4x98, offset is 35-37, bore is 58.1 I believe, however not all wheels with that set up will clear the calipers so ensure they check.

Yea the wheels i want are azev A which are one of the direct fit rims that will go over the calipers, so is that pic 18" wheels, just to clarify? thanks for that mate, BRG looks good,my brother just bought a alfa gtv in that colour, original..

Novitec - however without changing the shocks etc the ride is fccuking hard! \:D

There are lots of threads on here about springs etc, do a search, eibach are highly rated by many I think.

That doesn't make sense. For a given width, a 40 profile tyre should have shallower sidewall than a 45 profile and therefore be less prone to rubbing.

Seeing as the standard 20VT (non Plus) size is 205/50/16 then the correct 17'' size is indeed 225/40/17. Quite why they would be bottoming out so much on your car is a mystery.

Try this very handy site.

well thats strange because thats the reason i started this post, because i got a quote on alloy wheels today and on 17" wheels they said i needed 225/45/17 not 40 profile? probably to do with the load index of the tire more so than any problem with fouling or fitment.

Think you have misread the post - the correct profile for 17" should be 45 as stated. I didnt say the 17s rubbed with these 40 tyres, I said I had more problems bottoming out, catching bumper etc... I also said I cant remember the tyre width, I think they were 205 but not sure now.

The rubbing was with the 18s and tyre width of 225.

The general rule as Im led to believe is that for every 1" you add to the wheel diameter you add 20mm to the tyre width and reduce the profile by 10%.

ie: 205/50/16 = 225/45/17, which is what the shop has recommended he use isnt it?

I was refurring to dennis above, he says 225/40/17 are right for 17", where as the wheel supplier states 225/45/17, i just thought 45 profile might look a little tall on the rim. As long as the load index is ok on the 40 profile for the coupe's weight then ill go for 40's. So do 18" rub with a 35 mm drop on 225/40/18? good thread guys.. ;\)

Perhaps my slight rubbing was due to the original 20vna wheel being 6.5j (depth) with et 35 (i think) and the new wheel being 7j (deeper) with et 38 (bringing the inner wheel edge closer to the suspension/inner arch liner). \:\?

If I understand it correctly that would explain the rub on full lock. I may have completely misunderstood though - any pros who can confirm out of interest?

215/40/17 should be the correct size for your 17's as for 18's, they should be running a 35 profile.
Your tyres are rubbing because your using a too tall side wall.

So 18" need 35 profile tires then? thats not what the wheels supplier is saying? this is getting confusing.

Umm leaving the rubbing issue aside the correct sizes are determined by the rolling diameter of the tyre get the wrong size and the speedo will under (or worst - over) read.

A Standard 205/50/16 has a circumfrence of 1920.77 and a 225/45/16 has a circumfrence of 1912.91

225/40/17 - 1922.02
225/45/17 - 1992.71
225/35/18 - 1931.14
225/40/18 - 2001.82

Hence 17's should be 225/45 and 18's should be 225/35

i thought you should select a size closest to original rolling diameter,in which case it should be a 40 profile at 1922.02 ?

This is a tricky one isnt it - Im sure when I originally posted about the 17s having 40 profile tyres I was berated by beast for using the wrong profile and that I should have been on 45's.

All the wheel/tyre places have stated that 45 is correct for 17s and the internet tells me the same.

This one could run n run \:D - until you look into it you dont realise just how complex it all is.

Also raises questions when the 'experts' you are buying these things off, whom you ask advice may not know themselves.

Sorry, my mistake. I had 215/45/17 on mine and I now have 225/35/18.

I have 235/40/17's on mine. 8" wide rims and it looks about right although they're actually too big for the fronts, especially when you've lowered it a shade too much.

and what you say to this compilation:

9x17 wheelsize (possibly ET35) and 245/35 tyres round?

is this possible without an intervention?

And what is the widest tyre size that fits at rear? From 245 may be wider?
In my opinion there is a wider tyre at rear on the picture.(???)
Sorry for my English.:)
