I've just bought myself a new car (Range Rover 4.0 SE!) but I would really like to keep the coop as well and insure both.
I can really only justify this if I can get some kind of deal on the insurance. I cant really afford the coop insurance to keep it as a weekend car only.
Anyone done this? I feel its a bit unfair to pay twice for insurance - I cant drive them both at once!

Usually hard to do. As the insurers will only apply a no claim discount to one policy. I tried this with the Coupe and Stilo. They allowed it on a 3 month temp basis but after that insisted that I chose which way the NCD went. Ended up a good deal on the Coupe but daft money for the Stilo. Full premium and no NCD, so an 80Hp 1.2 family hatch had a higher premium than the Coupe.
Other way to do it is have a commercial motor policy which is entirely different. I have a Punto Diesel van for my side business and for rattling around in when the weather is bad and the Coupe stays snug at home.
Its possible to have 'open driving' for multiple vehicles on the same policy but this is normally for somebody with 5+ vehicles or a company..details differ between insurers.

Your best bet it to phone around insurers and explain what you're trying to do and ask if any of them will either:
(a) Give you a large "introductory" NCB to reflect the genuine NCB you have but can't use. Try Direct Line - when I was buying a private car after years of company car ownership they offered to give me an introductory NCB equal to my bike NCB at the time.
(b) Do you a good discount for insuring 2 cars with them. Direct Line and Norwich Union are both offering such discounts at the moment.
The important thing is that you can't just get on-line quotes, you'll have to speak to real people.
Dear monos, a secret truth.

Admiral do a multiple car policy which will cover both cars with the sam NCB. I am just going through this at the moment. Well this sounds great so I just 'phoned 'em and they said they do not, they only offer a small discount such as that already mentioned above from Direct Line and NU. They don't like engine mods either

Shop around but you may have a problem. I work for a thumping big broker (although on the money side not underwriting) and I can't see any of the mainstream companies offering it at the moment nor do the petrolheads downstairs know anybody who does it.
They are happy to quote on 2 cars but only 1 of them gets the NCD.

Cheers guys - lots of ideas there.
I'm with greelight at the moment so I will have to see what they say first.
I suppose another alternative is to transfer the policy onto the second car and drive the coop third party only as a car I dont own - which would mean transfering ownership to my wife. Sorry, a bit confusing. I just know that I can drive any car I dont personally own with third party insurance only.
I wonder if the V5 has to be in the wifes name or the "ownership" can be just finanacial ownership. I know the V5 is just the KEEPER and not necessarliy the owner.
I hope that makes a bit of sense.

Nooooo don't do that jap Most insurers will let you insure your 'existing' vehicle on good terms for say up to 3 months while you 'attempt to sell it' That's what I do. My insurer will let me insure for say a week at a time (£16 IIRC) when I want to drive the car, and do this a max of 10 times before you have to take out 'proper' cover.

I just know that I can drive any car I dont personally own with third party insurance only. I have a Coupe & an X5, both in my name. The Coupe is insured with me as a main driver (Noel Dazely) and the X5 with my wife as the main driver (egg)... egg certainly have no issues with the car being owned by me even though my wife is the main driver AND she is using her 7yr NCB against it. I'm surprised to hear that you can only get insured fully comp if you own the car with the insurers you have spoken to.

I've got two lots of NCB for 2 different cars. Admiral gave me a bonus of 5 years when i took out a second policy with them. So now i have 2 policies one with 10 years NCB and one with 7 years NCB.
But i've seen that admiral are offering multi car policies now, but you need to phone up.......

I use Admiral, 2 cars on one of their comprehensive Multicar policies, C3 about £130 and coupe £188. Full discount and life of undetected crime though.

HIC offer it as do direct line. I got dual insurance and used NCB on both policies with HIC, while their quote was about £20 more than the rest(quoted using my NCB) when i said it was currently in use on another car they wouldnt accept it and the quote went upto £1500 for the veggie tank god knows how much yours would be without NCB on it matey

Read my first post. You only get the NCD on one vehicle, regardless of any discount offered. Be careful on renewal because they are unlikely to offer another discount, you will probably pay full premium.
Most insurers do multiple vehicle policies but the catch is normally you need a fleet (5+) to qualify.

^ agreed. jap, you have one more option. Being a rangie, pick up one of the magazines and try the club insurers in there. I too had a rangie and could have insured through one of those, limited mileage and you *had to* a) have another car insured elsewhere (proving the rangie is not your only driver) and b) (usually) join some kinda 4x4 club. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the cheapest at the time, but the premium quoted was about half that of a normal policy thru my present insurer. Worth a try

Having said lots of nice things about Greenlight previously, I just decided to get a second car, and discovered they weren't so good with that.
I can second everything people have said about Admiral. They have a really easy to use website for preparing your quotation for multiple cars. They basically give you a large discount on your second car, on the promise that you'll transfer your primary car policy to them when that insurance expires with your current insurer.
Worked out nearly £500 cheaper than staying with Greenlight.
Hope this helps.
Ian.

I too have two cars, a coop and a punto.
Both of them are insured with a Direct Line multi car policy, and I get my full no-claims on both of them. The crucial thing is that this only applies if I'm the sole named driver on both cars.
They aren't really all that well up on their own rules at Direct Line though as I recieved a few letters from them after arranging my coupe insurance on-line demanding proof of a second no-claims. I had to read their own literature to them on the phone before they relented.

Cheers Gents.
I did get it sorted in the end. I called Greenlight and they have given me full NCD on a second policy. So I pay about £400 for the Rangie for a year. No too bad at all.
I've now just got the cure the backfire on the damn thing and I'll be sorted.
Thanks James
