Hi, I am new to Fiat Coupe and thinking about venturing from Celica, so .... I spotted one for sale at general car dealers (NOT Portofino Blue), very convincing, but do they even exist in such colour, I never saw one? Or is it a respray? I love the colour, but if it is a respray, it means...what exactly?? Bad, good, any ideas? Advice much appreciated.

Yes, on autotrader at £3295. It is not dark red, but true purple/violet/lilac, whatever this colour is called (always a confusion about this one). My ideal choice if everything is OK with it. Here it is (if the link works): http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/car...earch_full.y=10

Also, the guide here on the forum lists all possible colours, but no mention of this purple? Hmm...

Before I bought my coop I went to look at a Scooby Wagon from the same bloke - seemed decent enough and had some nice motors in stock. Also said he wouldn't normally touch anything that had had bodywork or paint repairs.

Erm no it doesnt, laquer oxidises, and gives a faded appearance as the light distorts as it travels through to the base. Basecoats dont fade, its the laquer that gets worn damaged, tired etc etc.
Straight colours fade, ie non laquered yellow's red, sprint blue etc etc.

Don't want to start a debate but I'm curious.
How come I have seen faded colours "under" laquer? By that i mean peeling it off and re-laquering, the colour is still faded even with the new top coat. I can compare to what hasn't been exposed to sunlight say in door shuts, engine bay etc, so I have a good idea what the original colour should have been like as a comparison.
Laquer isn't UV resistant, just a protective coating that brings the colour underneath alive, am I right?
Is it something to do with the type of paint used for example 2k, cellulose etc?
I know in the 70's and 80's laquer used was terrible and only lasted a few years.

If you have peeled the laquer off then its been put on wrong, you carnt peel laquer thats why you put it on wet base so it binds together. Factory and properly applied laquer will not peel. Unless its super cheap stuff for the diy'er.
Reason its faded underneath is because the laquer is wrong. If its peeling its useless, probably laquered over a straight base, like loads of people do with red.
Engine bays and door shuts shine more because the laquer isnt damaged and worn at.
Laquer is laquer, it shines, does nothing for the base colour. If you dont put laquer on the base will still match.
Base is partially UV resistant, has been for ages.
70's-80's well i wasnt around then, but i dont recall having painted any 80's cars that were laquered, celulose days those are.
If you polish or cut back a faded looking laquered car with say farecla it becomes not faded looking & shiny again, so where do you think the fading is? when you polish you do nothing for the base, only the top coat of laquer.
Cheap laquers are the problem, you will struggle to find an original painted car at even 10 years old thats dulling, occasionally manufacturers fcccuk up and get it wrong, but thats usually down to not enough laquer, like rover and nissan or toyota managed.
Find a faded looking car and its either an old crap re-paint or its just the laquer dulling off, oxidising etc.

Cheers for that info Carl. I'm always learning. What about Fiats? I seem to remember you saying somewhere else that the solid colours are not laquered from the factory, yet so many owners complain of peeling laquer, especially on the roof, why is this? When I bought my first coop from new, after about three months my neighbour smashed into it and it was repainted... twice as they got the first attempt colour match (speed red)wrong! Both times they laquered the repairwork which included front and rear bumpers, bonnet, both side doors... a virtual complete respray. I have no idea if it was originally laquered as I never thought to check.

Well you laquer paint that wasnt supposed to be laquered and it doesnt bind. When people blend panels and laquer dry paint thats where the problems start.
Speed red matches if you paint it as it should be, laquer it and its a no no.
Tis why speed red and yellow are a pain for looking faded, people laquer over non laquered paint in an attempt to blend, then they trap in a faded straight colour, before long it peels.
Like most aspects of the motor trade there are too many diy'ers giving it a go. thats why there are so many standards of paintwork around.
And of course 80% of cars have been painted somewhere, people just never spot it, so there easily confused. I carnt believe the amount of people who are stunned and cry when they hear there car has been painted, obvioulsy they can manage 5 years without a scratch or a dent. Some people think paintwork is illegal, and those who wont buy a car because its had paintwork are outright silly. they end up buying the biggest sheds going. Everything gets marked, bumped or knocked in its life.

Thanks to all of you guys, Portofino it is, then. It is my first choice of colour. I find it suits the coupe shape better, strangely, black is my No. 1, but not in the case of Coupe.
Carlt, what is it about Keighley Trade UK? I am kinda thinking of travelling up there... if the car is still available.

Skint, tell me why discount for Portofino? Forgive my ignorance, I am trying to migrate from Celica (still love them to bits), so know about Coupe only what I have glimpsed here and on various websites
