I think it disables the airbag if you have a baby seat in the passenger chair.

Early models, apart from UK AFAIK, had a key lock in the glove box for the factory fit alarm. All UK models had an aftermarket alarm (Scorpion, Meta) fitted at point of importation, siren often placed ahead of passenger front wheel, Scorpion units have a key to silence the siren. Later models (1998? on) had a key in or around the glovebox to disable the passenger airbag.

The car is an N reg 16vt registered in england since 1996.

Yes, thats what the handbook said. The alarm override lock and the CODE cards werent supplied on UK models. Which is odd, as mine still has the alarm keys.

My coupe has got the META alarm and also has the little keyhole in the glovebox. It does indeed turn off the alarm system.

Right direct from the manual:
Car Alarm System (Option)
How to Prevent the System from Working:
If the remote control unit's batteries run down or there is a malfunction in the car alarm, you can prevent the system from working by operating the latch in the glove compartment with the emergancy key supplied.

My handbook spends 6 pages describing the (optional) alarm system.
There is no mention of it not being fitted to UK cars.
Mine certainly has the glove box key switch fitted.
