Okay, I'll check it out and see what interesting things we can do. I haven't driven in France too many times and we should try to avoid the toll routes, but maybe we can sort something very nice with a hotel in Luxembourg - extremely cheap petrol there. Just a brainstorm...
- arrive in Calais around noon on Friday, I pick you guys up - go to Brugges for some shopping in group or on your own (CROWDY!), scenic tour by myself, food, party, sleep, breakfast - next day drive up to Luxembourg - meet up with people joining only Saturday - Luxembourg there around noon for food - visit some castle or vineyard or... - saturdaynight in a hotel, party, breakfast,... - each their own to England again on sunday
as an alternative:
- calais early saturday (10.00) - drive up to a nice town for food and shopping - drive up to a champagne chateau in Reims - stay in a hotel for the night - maybe we can arrange a trackday experience on sunday? ooh! Or just go watch one?
or something else:
- arrive in Calais early saturday - drive to Kortrijk or Brugges for shopping and an organised karting race, mixed sports event or similar - evening dinner in Ghent all-you-can-eat wok restaurant - explore the nightlife - stay somewhere in a hotel - no organised events on sunday - stay and explore or return
Anyone interested, could you post how many miles you want to do at max, starting from Calais...? And what your budget for the combination of organised activities (if you want to participate) and hotel + food is? And what activities you are interested in? (pick: shopping, karting, mixed sports competition, wine/champagne tasting, nightlife,...)
If this goes on I'll surely offer roadmaps etc. to the people interested so that nobody gets lost or so that anybody can catch up if you have a problem, arrive later,...

Yep looks good. Anyone mind if we bat around a few alternative suggestions? Amsterdam, for instance, is 225 miles from Calais, via Belgium of course.
(The big bridge at Millau in France is about 560 miles)

Major thing though is to make sure you have enough time for everything. I drove 450 miles up and down again for the Christmas do. I started off at 8.00 in the morning and arrived in Harrogate around 16.00. And believe me, that was with some spirited driving. So I guess starting from Calais, we shouldn't do more than 250 miles or so. That will take us to Luxembourg at the furthers. So if you just want to make it a fancy meeting with a lot of driving, pick one of the above suggestions. If you want something exotic, consider the Champagne tasting in a chateau. I know one that has the cellars far below the ground and you take a little train to drive around it. Might be a splendid experience, though we'll have to set up a party in a less 'classy' environment, which is where Ghent might come in nicely.
