I have my plans of lightning my flywheel.

Has anybody done this? It should gain a bit

only thing you will gain is the car is easier to rev.

Also you do realise you will need the gearbox apart, clutch off, then swap flywheel to do this? So might as well get a new clutch fitted at the same time

yeh its a lot of work to do just for the flywheel unless youve got the gearbox off or doing a rebuild as the only benifits will be a more responsive engine . ive just had mine done, around 2kg was taken off, costs me about £50 for lightening and then a skim of the clutch surface

Ok that sounds good! But i think the flywheel should weight about 14-15 kg, and it´s possible to lightend to 7-8 kg i think, Or why not buy an aluminum flywheel custom! i think that should be grim

i never made any measurements but think the weight of our flywheels are 8kg to begin with, and roughly 2-3kg is taken off, beyond that would be a bit dodgy as you will have to start thinking of the foces involved and make sure that your the clutch face will not distort under high loading.

aluminum flywheels are an option, they are very light so its hard to get the car going

Hmm ok but i think it is quite a diffrence between the 16vt:s flywheel and 20vts! So i think the 20vt:s flywheel is heavier!?

8kg of steel is a lot, you wouldnt want that much off and OE flywheel, and its not the amount you take of its where, removing a more central 5kg will make bugger all difference as its the peripheral weight that gives the wheels its angular momentum, so machining a few kilos off here is the best way, but if you go too thin then the wheel will fail due to heat stress from the clutch.

Are these flywheels cast, pretty sure they are, making minimum thickness 12mm. Make sure the face is ground first, then stepped, lightened and then balanced. Griding is preferable to a lathe on cast materials.

IIRC the 20VT flywheel is 10 kilo

Don't forget to have the flywheel balanced as well when having it lightened, I'm assuming that's not included in the £50 price quoted in this thread?

I have a pre-lightened and balanced flywheel available for 20vt. If you are interested, give Keith at Auto Integrale (0118 9710 281) a call as its sitting on his desk

na the £50 was for lightening and skimming only, cant remember how much the balance was as they done a couple parts at the same time.

one from keith was supposed to be sitting on my car, but he never got back to me in time for it to sent to me and fitted. also me losing his no, and the forum crashing did not help. i won't go into price but i can say that keith is the cheapest option in my experience by a LONG WAY.
