As I'm "pimping" my stereo system, I noticed the mounts for the speakers in the coupe's doors are rattly and flimsy, so does that Dynamat sound deadening stuff do any good or is it just another gimmick for the max power crowd?

I found it made a massive difference. I did both front doors and also the rear panels. You get much more base and also reduces road noise inside the car IIRC I paid £20 for a 2mx1m peice which covers the door just about perfectly. Ypu can also stick it on the inside of the outer door skin to cut out further resonance and also make the doors shut with a nice clink

a tip for you buddind "sound deadeners" (I know, I know, I'm making up my own words now).

Instead of buying the expensive dynamat, you can also buy rolls of bitumen (called bitumen roof flashing tape) from B&Q. I think the one I got recently was 0.5m x 10m for just over £20 (I've used this stuff in every car I've worked on, been using it for years now (prob since 98)). It's not as thick as dynamat or the other expensive car audio branded stuff, but it still does the job and you can double layer in areas you want to. It's better to cover bigger areas in some cases with the flashing tape than using small amounts of dynamat in. Me and a mate actually did a test, where he sound deadened a door in dynamat/brown bread (can't remember which now) and the other in flashing tape, and there was no difference between them tbh.

They're self adhesive, and when I use it I use a hot air paint stripper to heat up the strips then apply them to the panels (hairdryer would probably work also) and when they cool off they stick on like a btard! If you don't heat them up first they dont stick too well, so defo do this.

If you do a search online for "B&Q flashing tape" instead of getting a list of roofing websites, you'll actually find a mix of car forums ICE sections and roofing related stuff. It's pretty popular, and B&Q is always sold out of it for that reason!

S1MMA can thank Gouki's dad for that.

I remember spending lots of money on "Brown Bread" sounds dead sound deadening, only for my dad to show me the same stuff in B&Q for about a tenth of the price. Well, with age comes some advantages.

indeed, twas Gouki's old Orion that the test was done on!

I remember your dad looked at the brown bread we paid £20 for, and said, "what are you doing with that roofing tape?", then laughing at us for spending £20 on it. Saved us lots of cash over the years that little tip!

when you get tired of sound deadaning you can just munch on the brown bread. It'll probably kill ya mind, but hey - I'm sure it tastes great (if you define great to be "like crap").

Pinin there is not enough there to do a good job mate. i do not think you will notice any difference.
there are acoustical differences between genuine sound material and flashing but each to their own. it will be better than nothing.
i went halfway house and got this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/30-Sq-Ft-eDead-Ori...1QQcmdZViewItem

good stuff, and worth every penny. 30sq foot was about enough for most the car as i had already done the rear quarters in other stuff last year, but really need 60 sq foot to do doors and quarter panels, and maybe start on teh rear floor section... front doors are so so flimsy though compared to new cars. be better to make up a metal mounting plate first and attatch the speaket to this.... no amount of sound deadening will hold that area tight

Both the rear panels on mine are fully covered in flashing tape (although I prefer the dynamic qualities of the Wickes product to B&Q ). And boy does that stuff stick!

Seriously though, it cost me about £6 to do both panels all over - as opposed to £10 for a bit of Dynamat 10" x 10", it looks like a bargain.

No good if you're a performance hound, though - it must add about 10lbs to the car's weight. (Mind you, improves the front/rear balance!!).

LOL, Not a fan of Focus own brand then??? How long did it take you to lose the smell of the Bitumen? One tip, get strips of whatever your gonna use and put them on a hot radiator to get it nice and soft. really easy to apply then and super sticky. also get a roller, again a b and q radiator roller or similar would do. gives a neater finish and really bonds the stuff together

Just to echo the flashing tape comments... been using it for years mayself. however i will still say that i think dynamat is better but would not say its good enough to justify the price difference. especially if you double the thickness of the flashing tape.

and to concrete the fact that you definatly need to heat it up, didnt do it on my first car and when i took the door cars off it was in a pile at the bottom of the door!lol...

My preferance is B&Q products becasue B&Q is the closest to me

Had major feelgood factor on Saturday Finished installing the speakers behind the rear panels, put the panels back on, attached the rear bench, then properly soldered the JVC DVD player head unit in.
I then stuck on a prodigy DVD and cranked up the volume. Oh yes Absolute quality sound and could go LOUD before distorting! I guess it was the dynamat and also the hefty wood panel the speakers are installed in.
Well that's all just had to have "chufties" somewhere so why not in the ICE section

you boys just ain't got the trick yet ?

after you intall the sound proofing, even if it's the cheap stuff, to conceal the bitumen smell, you simply apply one layer of foil tape over the whole lot ( the 3" wide stuff ).

this seals the outer surface & also stops the smell pronto.

did my roof with a layer of dynamat, then sealed with foil tape, no smell ever

just done the roof of my coupe tonight with B/Q flashing tape

i must admitt i was a big sceptic of this stuff...but the diference is amazing..if i tap on the roof i get a lovely deep thud rather than that old tang noise

and the best bit was it only cost £20 for a 10m role.....10m of dynomat would cost you a morgage

Am I being a bit dim....what is the point of doing the coupe roof?

Is it to make the rain quieter?
