I've just got a short shifter for my 6-speed, just wondering if there is a how-to on the install for these? I've looked myself but can't find one, however I always miss some posts sometimes.
Thanks laugh

Monte6, for some reason the two guides for the 5-speed short-shift installation are under the Tuning section of the Howto's but I can't see anything referring to a 6-speed, if that is a different procedure....

It’s saying i don’t have permission for the How-to on late gearbox short shifter install? Is there any way to get permission?

Working on it, Monte6 smile

Is it still not accessible? Can you access any other howto?

Log in and you will be able to see it. Your attached image explains exactly why.

I need to ask - were you actually logged in at the time? If not you would have been denied access, as a guest.

Sorry Pete, just noticed your post - but at the top RH corner it appears Monte6 was logged in as his name is there

Apologies, that is true.

Try logging in again Monte6

However if you were trying to post a reply on that thread you would have received that message as the thread is locked and in any case posting in "How to Do" or " Basic FAQs" is restricted to Global Mods and Admins.

On investigation there is a simple explanation. The guide for the late short shift had been deleted from the main forum as it contained incorrect information.

It was, and is now, only visible to forum admin and general moderators.

I have removed it from the "How to do" index.

Oh ok fair enough. It’s a shame there isn’t an up to date version.

Perhaps if he moved a bit further north!

Don't suppose you'd be up for doing a howto?

TBH Edinburgh it is a really straightforward mod. On the principal of knowledge dispels fear, here it is.

I cannot provide pictures but for the totally alfa unit and its clones, it goes as follows:

Remove the battery and battery box

Pull off the ball / socket cable end from the gear selector mechanism and remove the weight which is held on with one bolt.

The new short shifter unit sits over the original ball joint on the mechanism, replace the the weight and bolt which keeps the new SS in place.

Push the ball / socket cable connector onto the new SS ball joint.

Replace battery box and battery

Job done and the great thing is it can all be put back to normal if you don't like it.

Finally got around to installing the short shifter in my plus. Was a pretty easy job, i took a few photos just to clear things up for potential future coupe owners laugh
Full run down for the totally alfa short shifter;
1) Remove battery and battery drip tray, (see workshop manual/screenshot provided) There may be some stuff attached to the drip tray. Just remember to replace it all correctly.
2) Pry off the shifter linkage socket from the ball joint with a 13mm spanner.
3) Remove the counterweight with a 13mm spanner by removing the bolt on top
3.5) (ONLY FOR TOTALLYALFA SHORT SHIFTER) Shave off some of the counterweight for clearance issues, i used an angle grinder and a dremel, as well as a fresh coat of primer and black paint to help with corrosion prevention.
4) Replace the Counterweight ensuring it sits flush properly, with the corresponding “locater nub” seated in its complementary part of the counterweight.
5) Place the short shifter over the counterweights threaded bolt and over the shifter linkage ball (apply grease), make sure the unit is firmly in place and won’t just fall off. Apply some sort of locktight to the thread of the counterweight and thread the bolt back on, also ensuring it’s on tight and won’t wiggle off after driving.
6) Place the Shifter socket into the short shifter ball, apply grease and ensure it’s snapped into place correctly.
7) Refit the battery tray and battery (Do everything in reverse wink )

Easy cool
Remember all mods to your coupe are at your own discretion and i’m not a mechanic so it all could be completely wrong, but my coupe is still alive!… for now. frown
