I'm going to network our house next month and was wondering if anyone who has done this has any recommendations for sockets/faceplates (or indeed general dos and don't). I say 'I'm going to' but what I actually mean is that I'm paying a sparky to run CAT6 through and I'll install/wire/test the sockets.

It will comprise of a 4 port (drywall) feed from near the router going to a 2 ports feed (surface mount) and two x single port feeds (one surface mount , one drywall) elsewhere. I'm thinking the keystone type of socket will better than those that take a conventional RJ45 socket as input due to lack of depth (particularly for the 4 port one) and also requiring one less connection between wires.

Google chucks up the following possible brands/suppliers

Kenable

Cablemonkey

Screwfix stuff

Penny for your thoughts.

FWIW I've used Kenable a lot - they're reliable and very reasonable.

That will do for me as a recommendation, duly ordered. Thank-you.

Sparky is booked in for the start of next month and I can't believe how much I'm looking forward to getting this done, I should probably get out more. smile Next job, get some form of decent broadband connection but unfortunately that is out of my direct control.

I would suggest Cat 7 rather than 6 as the price is very similar to Cat 6 but more future proof. cat 7

I have discovered that Ubuiqiti Unifi Router/Security gateway, Switches, WiFi Access Points are robust, work well and I would highly recommend.

I did look initially look to use CAT7 but there's just as many reasons not to bother in a home install unless there's patch panels or the like involved as the terminations. On balance for our needs CAT6 is fine.

Yes, Ubiquiti stuff is good.
