Many of us will donate a quid or two to the Poppy Appeal each year, but I've recently read a post on Pistonheads about something a bit different and I thought it was worth re-posting here.

I was really taken with the story behind these Poppy pins - made from the brass shell detonators that are still being dug up from the fields of the Somme 100 years later

http://www.poppyshop.org.uk/somme-1916-poppy-lapel-pin.html

The package includes a card detailing one serviceman who died during the Great War - be prepared for the room to get "a bit dusty" when you do some research....

Makes our issues with keeping old Fiats on the road seem rather insignificant.

I missed out on the original edition to commemorate the first day of the battle of the Somme, but I registered my interest and I was notified about this 100 th anniversary edition. The presentation and story behind each one is very moving.

Mine arrived a couple of weeks ago and is worn with pride regularly. I tend to wear a poppy lapel badge year round anyway, although wearing this pin has a bit more sentiment with the individual story behind it.

Very good. That website was terrible though - really badly designed.

Both of my grandfathers survived the Somme (and the whole of WW1) which is pretty lucky for me.

Thanks Nigel. I'll look at getting one.

Funnily enough in the summer I found a lump of something on a beach in Norfolk that was unusually heavy. After some light Googling I found it was from a No 119 fuse that was no doubt fired during training exercises or for target practice.

I'll stick a photo up of it later.
