My daughter is off to Uni in September and she's decided she can't afford to keep her car while she's there.

She'll have accumulated 1 years No Claims discount in a couple of weeks and then she's going to sell her Yellow Bug. What happens to her No Claims, can she keep them until she gets another car in a year or 2 or are they toast?

From what I understand you can keep them for 1 year then they become null
I'm currently only insured on a classic policy which does not use ncb and wife insured to get her own ncb level up currently the insurer has honoured my wife with my ncb as she has always been named driver on my insurance, but will go back to 1 year at end of year, but I have got to change my policy to use my ncb at renewal so I don't loose my 15 odd years ncb

Nothing is straight forward with insurance and my daughter will be 17 in June so the whole insurance for 17 year olds is about to hit us

When my daughter moved to London and stopped needing a car (and couldn't really afford it either!) she was able to keep the NCB for 2 years or 3 if she took out another policy with the same insurer - Privilege.

As she still owned a car (1977 Mini) which is on our drive just before the end of the third year she insured it on the minimum basis she could to keep the NCB alive, at about £150 it seemed worthwhile.

we did the same. put some insurance on an old mini. it didnt accrue more no claims but it meant that the 2 years was extended - and effectively renewed. better to spend 100 quid than to lose 4 or 5 years no claims

Many thanks for the replies guys. I'll get her to have a chat to her current insurer and see what they say.

@H_R My daughter has a 1.6 X reg Beetle. She's with Tesco and has a Telematics box fitted. With my wife and I as named drivers she pays £860 a year. Having the box and a couple of oldies on the policy reduces the premium quite a bit.
