Ticking a few things off my to do list! I want to improve my garage (man cave) lighting, I currently have one fluorescent tube light but it's not enough! The garage is double garage but in a L'shape! Also wouldn't mind going down the energy saving route! smile

Any thoughts/suggestions? Ta, Mr C

You could go LED but depending how much time you spend in there the cost could outweigh the savings. I have three flourescent tubes in mine and plan to fit one more over the work bench. Cheap and cheerful at around £15 per fixture including tube. Could add reflectors to potentially double their output too.

Have a look on eBay for an old kitchen spotlight multi gu10 unit. Decent 55w equivalent led bulbs are now under£10 and still enable you to spotlight work areas.

In my kitchen I replaced 6 x 55w bulbs and from burning 330watts to 27watts. It makes a noticeable reduction in my electric bill.

Point me at such a high brightness LED bulb please, John? Been looking for a while but not found anything with that sort of output...

Try these

You may need to experiment with colour but they are the best I have used. I now prefer cool white to the warm colour.

Bill for electric wnet down over £10 a month with these installed (i do my own monthly bill readings). Have added LED downlighters in my dining room and bathroom too now. I reckon the payback is under a year and that does not even account for the pitiful lifespan of the halogen GU10s.

Right so these are direct replacements for GU10 halogens, correct? I bought some rather cheaper versions (like this but a different seller) a while ago and they give an obvious (to me anyway) strobe effect at 50Hz, and the seller claimed that I needed to have a "driver" or transformer for it. I said that they weren't low voltage and didn't need a transformer, they were being sold as direct mains voltage replacements. Seller did offer to refund less return postage but I'd thrown most of the boxes away frown Just living with them now...

On the topic of GU10 LED bulbs we picked up a couple of bulbs from ikea the other day and found them to be pretty decent. More than reasonable light output compares with a Halogen and the colour temperature is very similar too.

What bout flozzies T5 or super T8. Led is slightly more energy efficient however it's dependant on the area to be lite. I.e number of led units required v number of flozzies required to light area to same intensity.

I just switched all my GU10 spots for LED units, the difference is dramatic, it's a much more white clear light, the beam isn't as diffused as with the halogen lights, it's a much more focused beam but I love them, they give a really modern look and would be great for a workshop as the light is pure bright light, not yellowing.
Also, they use less than 1/3 the energy for 4 times the lumens. Win win.
