I saw that story; I'd be interested in what mitigating circumstances some of these drivers were able to put forward.
MrsC has one of those "eccentric" uncles, who was convicted of knocking a cyclist off his bike and injuring him (fortunately not permanently). He is now moaning angrily to anyone who will listen about the increase in the cost of his insurance after getting 6 points. Personally, I'd have burned his licence using his hair as tinder.

Most of these offences must be electronic or automated, otherwise how can a policeman stop someone who has 20 points on their license (or has no license/insurance/tax etc..) and write them another ticket. The alarms bells must be ringing somewhere.
