I don't think the leveling system/washers applies to HID's when a projector type is used.
I also think the wording is that they function when fitted.

ive always thought if you have washers they will need to work. Aslong as the levelling system works and the hids are aligned right, then HIDS will get through an MOT.

Really? What is the levelling system all about? My Jaguar S Type had HID projectors as standard. There was no headlight adjustment in the car, it was all automatic. It's supposed to stop you dazzling other drivers. Only the Xenon HID versions has auto adjustment. HID's without projectors are just horrible!

Yes, was told that all factory fit HIDs have build in self-levelling, but I am not really clear on what system needs to accompany retro-fit HID systems

All that is required of the Coupé's headlights in relation to HID's is that they're the correct colour (ie no crazy purple lights) and are displaying the correct beam image. The MOT guide says that if the car has headlight washers and/or self levelling system fitted then they have to work, so if you happen to have an imported Coupé with the headlight washer jets on the bonnet then they would have to work but for any other Coupé there is no reason for failing the test due to having HID's. I had the same problem with HIDs at my MOT in June. I ended up having standard bulbs put back in because I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of finding another MOT tester. It proved to be a terrible mistake, as this garage then also failed the car because of an airbag warning light. They cheekily said they could pass the car if the bulb was removed. I agreed, but they then proceeded to destroy my centre console (even though it doesn't need removing in order to get at the bulbs) and dash in the process. And sent me on my way with my undertray dragging along the road... It was a well known Italian car "specialist" as well
