Quite alarming, watched it 5 times trying to put myself in his position, would I get myself in that situation? I hope not. Idiot.
Horsing around's a serious business.

I'm sure this guy won't be riding like that again. Some lessons are hard learned. Here's me learning mine...

Bloody lucky. Deserves to learn a lesson, pretending to be on a magic carpet. I can only think he entered some hypnotic state where the motion induced a notion of invincibility Maybe the fact that he's filming his progress is testament to a certain attitude? The bikers will put me right on this if it's becoming more common for insurance/safety purposes.

Think this is one of subjects that will never have a solution. I know accidents do happen but I think inexperience and roads we relax our concentration on (regular routes and motorways) have to be the bulk of the crashes. We all know it can happen but we can soon forget. I've met & know people that go either way with how they feel after its happened to them. These life changing events can only be taught by the ones who have lived through it. I think most people don't mean to act or behave badly but just like when a group of people leave they're brains at the airport on a jolly or you feel the need to show off when you should know you're not impressing anyone but showing our own need for attention. After saying this I have to say I still adore most machines

He's very very lucky!
The panic when he realises he's in trouble is hard hitting, but as people have said, he was riding way too fast and should have been reading the road way way ahead.

Think of it as evolution inaction. Removed that redundant space for you, after all, he survived. I'm a biker myself and I just can't get my head around how he never clocked that the trucks were stopped/moving very slowly. The cars in front of them are visible and the MK4 Fiesta behind even had its hazards going. Maybe the fact that he's filming his progress is testament to a certain attitude? The bikers will put me right on this if it's becoming more common for insurance/safety purposes. I can only speak for myself, but the main reason i film my progress is that i currently ride a tiny sub £1000 Chinese bike all over Scotland and i like footage of both the scenery and the bikes (surprising) capabilities to post on the relevant owners club forum. I have had several near misses though and can see where footage would be helpful in the event of an insurance claim... Provided it didn't just show you riding like a complete eejit.

I'm a biker, and I would never ride like that. It's asking for trouble from the cars who can't see you coming up on their inside. He was obviously fixated on not getting side swiped by a car he was undertaking, and forgot to look ahead.
It's a simple case of riding like a bell end.

Thank you, Mr. R. I was doubtless looking for a sensible reason where none existed, I attached your name to this thread due to your previous informed biker posts. Bell end, it is.

Not being a bike owner... but could he have used the hard shoulder, kind of smacks of hanging onto the brakes to long and not steering out of trouble?

One of the things that kills and injures a *lot* of bikers is target fixation, which works like this:
1. I am having a happy day, zooming along on my motorbike.
2. Oh noes! I am zooming towards a bad thing! A very bad thing!
3. I don't want to get to that bad thing so I am going to pull on Mr Brakes very hard indeed.
4. Look at that bad thing! It really is very bad and I am heading towards it very fast! Come on, Mr Brake, do your thing.
5. I am really now very close to the bad thing. Look at how close it is! It's so very, very bad and, look, I'm going to plough right into it. Look how close it is! Look how bad it is!
6. SMASH!!!
It all starts going wrong at step 3, which should be.
3. OK, I'm going to ignore the bad thing for a second and have a look at what else is around me.
4. Fine, I'll just steer round the bad thing.
5. As I'm steering I'll keep away from Mr Brakes, because that will make the bike unstable, and I'll just have a dab of Mr Throttle instead.
6. Nice gentle steering. Smashing.
7. Goodbye, bad thing!
One of those things that's *really* easy when you're reading it on a web forum and *really* hard when you're heading towards an obstacle at EEEK! mph.
Dear monos, a secret truth.

The same can be said for mountain biking.
"I am not going to go over that edge, I am gettting closer to the edge, seriously close aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh"
Replace edge with tree, route, other cyclist or any possible obstacle.

I stand by my bell end statement. Walk like a bell end, run like a bell end, drive like a bell end, ride like a bell end. It all ends up with a grazed knee and shouting "mum !"
Mmmm Target fixation. It can be used to your advantage.
I did a Bike Safe course recently, and the Police instructor was getting me to keep eye contact with him stood in the centre of the car park, while I rode in circles around him.
It is amazing how small the circle can get if your head is looking into the centre at a fixed object. The steering part happens all by itself.

He should have at least attempted to stop, obviously inexperienced and scared of going into a skid. Probably not looking far enough ahead either. If he applied the brakes at the first 'shit' he could have avoided the carnage. Anyway, he's probably sold his bike now.
Horsing around's a serious business.

Anyway, he's probably sold his bike now. For SaleSuzuki Bandit S in blue One "careful" owner Only ever ridden on dry clear days Light damage to right fairing/mirror/grip/engine bar caused by low speed lay down Interesting truck tyre motif on left swingarm Seat may need re-covering (mysterious brown stains) Comes with free jacket, helmet, gloves and boots, trousers sadly not fit for resale Genuine reason for sale: my guide dog doesn't like riding pillion.
