My Scottie is finally finished!! After her ignominious display at the Surrey rolling road event I took her up to Barbz for a bit of fettling. He cured a misfire and fixed various boost leaks, but suggested that to get consistent performance I needed a boost controller. I went for the Gizzmo on personal recommendation (and cost).

Barbz fitted this for me last week, and it is a really good piece of kit (as well as looking quite cool in the car). Once one of the preset boost settings is engaged that level of boost is maintained right up to the red line. The acceleration is smooth and epic at the same time, and Scottie is now performing how I expected when she went Stage 3. I'm only using two of the six settings at the moment (one for cruising and one for hooning) but I will have a little play with some other settings when I get the time.

Many thanks to Barbz for his help and wisdom bow (and for supplying me with a few cosmetic bits).

I have been thinking about the Gizzmo for a while now.

Where did you buy it from and how much did you pay.

As above, I would also like to know where you mounted it and see a couple of pics.

Thanks

Just where Barbz put mine. I had another drive today, and this really is a good piece of kit. Popped her into second gear, and the boost kicked in fully at about 2900rpm, just held and held right up to the line. Both sets of cheeks were well sucked in shocked . I cannot recommend this enough (so far).

Nice one tim smile

That is exactly what i need, as also suggested by barbz, I've had my car back (modded) 3 months now and absolutley loving it more and more each day, also had the car dyno'd for the first time last weekend. I have to say i was impressed with the figures, but over 3 runs there was a little inconsistency in the boost, i have a manual controller atm, and really do need to get round to an ebc. Do you have a picture or link for the gizmo you have please tim?

Really glad you've sorted your niggles and enjoying the car smile

here you go -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid...0&_from=R40

Tim has the gizzmo ms-ibc and i have the gizzmo ibc , both do the same job but tim's one has 2 more presets and can hold more boost but best if you read the spec's on them .

Sorry for the dumb question but........

I can see how the boost is controlled but the fueling is still controlled by the Motech ECU?

So with different boost curves, is the fueling controlled by the Motech ECU based on airflow, RPM, etc?

Thanks smile

Would it be practical to mount one in the glovebox? I have the ms-ibc (not installed yet) and if i remember correctly it can be operated from the scramble button.

if i remember right the scramble button only gives you an over boost for a few seconds and not full controll of the ibc .

Thanks Nismo. I think fueling is based on airflow too. I think that the Motech ECU's question mark is that it doesn't have an input for boost pressure. It derives it from airflow and rpm. So if you have 2 or more boost curves with a standard map is there scope for fueling error? I don't know but if I fitted a stand alone boost controller I'd consider having it mapped as well.

Barbz gave me three options regarding placement....

Under the light adjuster switches
On top of the steering column (masks a bit of the dashboard)
In place of the ashtray (PITA to fit rolleyes)

I went for the first option. I'm sure you can fit it wherever you want, but I'd want to be able to see it and activate easily from my driving position.

What gain and duty cycle have you used for the two settings?
Do you use open or closed loop?

You can use it as a Scramble button or as the Channel selector (ie changes the Boost level with each press)

Best ask Barbz for the details, but the device was set on open loop..... I'd sooner have it set and be able to judge if there is a problem rather than the device try to correct any leaks, etc..

I have 5 channels with closed loop and number 6 Open Loop with a Gain of 6 and a Duty of 89.

Dont set your Gain more than 10, or you will get boost creep and apparently put extra stain on clutch and gearbox.

My settings run like this:
Channel 1 = 0.6 BAR but Gain is 10, so good spool up
Channel 2 = 0.8 BAR
Channel 3 = 0.99 BAR
Channel 4 = 1.11 BAR
Channel 5 = 1.24 BAR
Channel 6 = 1.39 BAR Open Loop

I read a lot and have had mine about 18 months. With a lot of experimentation.

Try to use 3rd gear for setting up maximum boost levels or even better 4th, though good luck finding somewhere you can smile

The Channel Selector/Scramble switch is a good one to use, as you can use low channels for first and second gears then up the boost in higher gears.

I am tempted to get an Apex- AVCR just for the in gear boost control. Though I think the Gizzmo is slightly more modern in terms of technology.

Yes you need to leave EBV plugged in electrically and loop tubing onto the inlet/outlet if I remember right.

BTW thats a very tidy install both of you well done. As I have a Widget the air vents not an option but below the starter button is, I might move mine there too. smile (Any tips about that install gratefully received)

Thanks Charlie, i'll dig out my old pierburg and plumb it in.
I have widget too hence the alternative mounting. I unscrewed the plate from the back of the gizzmo and used it as a template. Before cutting i checked there was nothing behind (plenty of space, just be careful of the wires from the start button) then placed the back plate in the desired position (line of sight through the steering wheel may be a minor issue) and carefully cut around it with a sharp knife. The outer leatherette is very easy to cut and covers a layer of foam, under that is a thick layer of plastic. I drilled each corner of the plastic and used a small modeling saw to join up the holes. After a bit of trimming the gizzmo slid in nicely.

Had just enough length, I ran the lead behind the centre console, across the passenger footwell behind the ecu and then behind the wing.

Won't be ready by then, i'm up to see Flea on sat and still need to get a new alarm and battery before it's reset again. If you remind me sunday morning before the grasshopper i'll bring some tools with me to fit yours.

I took your install as inspiration but was uneasy cutting into the dash. So I had the idea that the Headlamp adjuster and instrument dimmer switches would make a great location.

So I removed the switch, then got to work with a hacksaw and a file, with careful shaping at the back, the Gizzmo can be angled very slightly upwards. It's a 30 minute job, with no drilling and it can be put back any time with just a replacement switch (Cost approx £10)

As I have HIDs the headlamp adjuster motors are not connected and I always leave the instruments on full brightness.

I am not sure whether the missing rheostat for the dimmer will be a problem but if it is, I will reuse just the rotary wheel/switch and locate it behind the dash,

Next step is to locate the Gizzmo remote switch on centre console for rapid changes of boost smile

Looks nice, i thought about that but wasn't sure about disconnecting the switches.
I got a new illuminated button for mine and i had an old immobiliser socket in my steering cowl so i swapped it for the new scramble button.

I believe you bumped into a friend of mine at the dyno, Ian?

Liking that, though I am leaning towards down by electric window switch.

Solenoid is cable tied to the relay next to the original pierburg valve.

Yes i did, seemed like a nice bloke, one of a few ford guys who took the time out to have a chat. Apparently i was looking a little nervous, not sure if that's just how i normally look or if i was a bit worried about getting the coupe back on a dyno after Surrey! The first two guys walked pasted looking at the coupe and one of them said "tried racing one of those once and blew my engine up" biglaugh

Nismo did you notice any performance benefits with the Gizzmo compared to the HDI? ie holding boost up revs better or does it just have more functionality?

very hard to say , i liked the hdi for ease of use/price and setting up the boost level you wanted on my remapped setup but i would say the gizzmo is a big step up on my modded setup , very easy to install and use and it holds the boost level very well . i changed to the gizzmo before i had the car mapped by flea so i can't say if the hdi would have performed as well as the gizzmo has , but it may have .

to cut along story short , i'm very happy with the gizzmo on the set up i have now .

The main difference between the two controllers is that the HDI is open loop only, and the Gizzmo has open/closed loop functionality. In short, this means a single duty cycle for the HDI so the the turbo will perform according to natural efficiency. With closed loop it will vary the duty cycle in order to try and maintain a target boost pressure, so at high rpms this duty will increase. This pushes the turbo harder and sometimes out of efficiency, but ultimately a turbo can only flow so much, therefore it is still possible for boost to drop off regardless of duty cycle. Efficiency is everything!

Exactly where I put mine. Easy to see and easy to use. I'm half-thinking of removing my boost gauge from the top of the dashboard..... chinny

After a couple of hours, umming and erring, cutting measuring and faffing on, finally decided mines going right here

..hope I never have to remove it though biglaugh

Big thanks to dad! Couldn't have done it without him, well I could, but it would probably "or" should I say definitely be squint, cockeyed or I'd have half the bloody dash strip scratched to bits... laugh

Booked in with barbz on monday for installation/setup a decat, and a service. I reckon the long drive down will be well worth the fun, long, musical drive back laugh

I'm going to try and put mine in the metal dash like Angelo's above. Can someone tell me what's behind the metal strip just there ? Will I have to cut the plastic dash behind ? I assume there are loads of wires back there ?

I had to cut a little bit of the plastic dash, but only a tiny bit using a dremmel. the only wires behind it, that you will hit if your not careful are the dash tweeter wires, I just taped them up out of the way. Apart from that your good mate smile
