Looking for a solution to this:

I have multiple strings below each other where the first part is the same but is followed by something else. Say like so...

Fiat Coupe Red
Fiat Coupe Blue
Fiat Coupe Black

I'd need a function to pull out the part that is the same in all cells

Result = Fiat Coupe

Anyone?

you could parse the cells? But the common part would need to be in th same place

You'd need a user defined function, written in VBA. I can't think of a practical way to do this with formula.

Would that be a problem for you?

if its as basic as suggested in your example =LEFT(A1,10) would give the result you want.

you can use =MID(before,12,99) to split the colour into a seperate cell if needed.

another option if you have a few variables but you know all the combinations would be create a master table of conversions and use a lookup function.

If your data is in cells A1:A3 then the following formula will return what's common between A1 and A2, if that helps.

=LEFT(A1,MAX(INDEX(ROW(INDIRECT("1:" & LEN(A1)))*NOT(ISERROR(FIND(LEFT(A1,ROW(INDIRECT("1:" & LEN(A1)))),A2))),0)))

Ok. I presume expanding that to a list of 20 cells would be quite a long thing. smile

Thanks anyway - helped me out although I had to strategically place that formula.
