Lightened flywheel = vibration? #1380860

I've recently rebuilt my engine and while it was apart I thought I'd throw in a few minor mods. One of these was a lightened and balanced flywheel. I had a machine shop take 3kg off it from 8.5kg.

When I fired up the car for the first time I noticed the engine tone was different, lower and throaty. Between 1.5k and 2k rpm there's a very noticeable vibration when revved in neutral. I also noticed a loss in torque in the the same rev range when driving in a higher gear. This led me to point the finger to the flywheel for all the above symptoms.

Has anyone experienced any of these symptoms?

I dont know much about 16vts, and could be talking crap..
but if the engine has being rebuilt,is there a chance the balance shaft has being put out of phase..???

just a suggestion hope you get it sorted

Generally not but it's possible. Was the flywheel balanced with the whole rotating mass?

As above check balance shafts too.

As the guys above have said either it's balanced incorrectly or something else is out of sync

I have a 3.8kg fidanza flywheel and dont have any vibration above the ordinary - engine revs far more freely and to be honest I saw no down side - even moving off from a standstill was not noticabaly more difficult

Hey guys i havent been running a balance belt for a while (before and after rebuild). I never felt this vibration before.

The flywheel was balanced by the same place that did KJ's and they use top of the range modern machines. I agree they still could have got it wrong. Perhaps i shouldve included the cover plate with it! i never had the crank balanced either. It was a chance i thought id take to save money! doh.

Ive read that a weighty flywheel dampens engine vibrations somewhat but if Saint isnt experiencing this with a 3.8kg flywheel then maybe its something else.

the pressure plate should be every time together with FW when balancing FW/ FW with crankshaft+pullyes..

Thought id close this thread with an update. Turns out i was running on 3 cylinders hence the aforementioned symptoms! I discovered that the connector to injector 4 was loose.

Problem solved and now she purrs like a kitten... well one on steroids!
