Last week my brothers friend invited me to join him on a charity cycle from London to Amsterdam.

My good lady bought me a Boardman MTB for my birthday, but I don't think that is entirely suitable to be cycling over 80 miles a day for 4 days.

She agreed that I would need to get a proper road bike for this job and subsequently went and put the deposit down on this for me,

Not quite up to the specs of others bikes here but none the less the reviews are very good!

The Mrs has got the weekend off (She gets one in four) so not sure I am going to be popular if I go out on the bike. But I might meet up next week if you go still! Sadly I will still be on the MTB as won't have the Road bike for a few months yet!

Interesting, that's the one I was pondering getting, but I didn't see enough difference between it and the Team Non-Carbon to justify the further £300. What clinched it for you Mark?

Nice looking bike. I have a Chris Boardman hybrid and it's a decent machine, well once I got it sorted after the stupidity of a previous owner.

So you got a full carbon bike for about £1000! It looks really nice.
I bet you'll get a really good average speed going through Holland too.

Dunno why to be honest emjay! The idea of a carbon frame just appeals to me so chose that! I guess there is a little bit of the show off in me coming through!

Both have the same frame so the key difference is the groupset, Ultegra is a hike up from 105 and looks a lot better as well as being lighter. Then there is also a carbon seatpost and better tyres.
Unless you are getting serious and intend to do some racing the 105 is also a very good groupset and will last a long time. The chainset is also better on the pro and all that stuff adds up to about 1kg of weight saving.

On bikes less really does cost more

I bought my carbon Focus Cayo in as-new condition for £700 (with £140 worth of carbon bars fitted).

Well Marks link goes to the Team carbon but he said he had the pro team carbon, maybe mark has the wrong link? However but if Mark (emjay) is referring to the non carbon version then the £300 will be the frame cost, and well worth the extra IMHO.

Whatever you do, don't take it back to Halfords once you've wheeled it out of the door. Find a good independant bike shop to service it.

Elder81, how are you getting on with this bike?

Is it fast?
Is it comfortable?
Is it lasting well?
Are you happy with it?
Have you had to change anything on it?
Are the brakes safe/ powerful?

I'm looking at this and possibly a Focus Cayo as an alternative, but I'm so overcome by all the carbon fibre and shiny bits that rational thought seems to be impossible.

Also there seems to be a woman's variant that's about £120 cheaper. I keep thinking of Redbeard Rum in Black Adder "ah you have a woman's bike my lord", but really, what's the difference?

Geometry is different on a woman's bike.

Carbon's nice and comfortable to ride.
