I am thinking of changing my car, and the most stress free (if not the most cost effective) way of getting rid of it would be to PX it against another car. I have no access to glasses guide so I was wodering what I should expect for it as a PX It is a 1997 528i SE Manual Silver with Grey leather 107k with full service history 3 owners from new Later "Angel eyes" headlamps and later rear lamp clusters. Non-Nikasil engine MOT until next September, no advisories. Outstanding condition throughout, it really does look like a much newer car. The only issues are a couple of very small rust spots (One on bootlid and another above the windscreen), and bit of paint on one rear arch which has been blown in and looks slightly different colour in certain light. All the consumables are in good condition. So how much do you think I can expect? Cheers.

£2,000 from a dealer. Another £500 if sold private. Check out some sale sites like Pistonheads etc.

Cheers mate, that is actually more than I was expecting.
Most of the ones I have seen similar seem to go for around £1500, although I am sure my car will be in better condition than most of them.
(A bloke at work paid £5000 for a 2004 525i and my one is in better nick :P)
Plus it is a manual and manuals are relatively rare.

Not sure if my car has had the prop damper or the spring seats done to be honest. There are certainly no issues with the way it drives, with no knocks or rattles anywhere.
It even averages 30mpg which is really good for a car of its size.
The main reason I didn't want to sell privately is all of the hassle. I need to keep a car on the road due to work, and buying one and selling the other will be a right ball ache due to having to declare SORN on it whilst it is parked on the drive with no insurance.

Thanks Chrissy.
I only paid £1700 for it 12 months ago, and I haven't spent much on it so taking £1000 wouldn't be a great loss.
However it is a bit of a shame to sell for that, as it is a very nice car and I am sure it has a few years of life left in it yet.
I am not in a rush to do anything for the time being, I may hang onto it for a while longer as there is nothing wrong with it.
£1000 isn't a lot of money nowadays really.

The 528i has the perfect balance of power and grip. You can drive it fast and enjoy it, in comparison to an M5 where you end up vastly over the speed limit. Great cars.

It is a great car, if I could critisise it though, it is rather big and slightly univolving to drive.
It goes around corners and glides over bumps with such little fuss that it hides the impression of speed a bit too well.
The Mrs is also only 5ft tall, and she has trouble parking it due to it's size.
It even does well over 30mpg quite easily, which is really good for a car of its size and performance.

I'm impressed you get 30 mpg from it . My brothers 523 (2.5 litre) will only just average that with careful driving (confirmed by the computer). You've another 300 cc in what, I believe to be, an over bored version of his engine.
As for the in-involved drive, may I recommend coil overs. German eBay is your friend. Really sets the car off (as long as you use the genuine aluminium suspension components rather than the cheap steel copies). With a manual gearbox also, the car is a peach to drive every day. Very rewarding.

Very rewarding. 30mpg is the average, on a slowish trip to the coast I managed 38mpg according to the computer. When I worked out the consumption from when I filled up it worked out at around 36mpg Still cannot moan about that too much. It does a similar MPG to my previous Ford Puma 1.7 and is better on Fuel than my Alfa 156 2.0 TS was.

If it's a swap you're after.........how about Mrs Stan? She's the same size as a four door saloon car although less economical. Very well upholstered, one careful owner, never driven hard (in case the paper bag falls off! ) and has been taxed and tested recently, heck I'll even throw in some cash your way! Please? Thanks for the offer Stan, but I already have one Mrs. And one as you are well aware is more than enough. Have you tried Part exchanging her for a younger better finished model?

I have looked at younger models........hence the black eye when Mrs Stan caught me looking! I am allowed to look as long as I don't touch.

To answer the original question... I was offered £500 as a PX
There is no way it is going to be sold for that much, I would rather keep it.
I am pretty sure I could get £1000 for it easily, due to it being in really good condition.

Ive just done a CAP valuation for you (Car Auction Price) it suggests £500-£530 trade. I'm sure you will get offered more as a PX against a retail car, but anything more than the £500 will just be discount/margin in the car you're looking at. Kev (Toyota Salesman)
