A place to post you more treasured driving road,, Mine has to be the A6 Kendal to shap, An old trunk road through stunning scenery, lakeland fells deep valleys and some scary drops. Made mostly redundant now by the M6 but once was the main road from london to Scotland. (So its fast, wide and if you pick the right time, empty ) Even since I had my first car (1.3 nova) I wanted a car with enough power to feel at home on this road, The wide road, steep incline together with altitude makes allmost all cars feel puny and breathless, But I am happy to say my 20VT attacks it with delight. It really plays to coupe's strengths having 2nd and 3rd gear twisty sections (never under 40) together with a 3/4 mile straight which would result in as high a speed as you nerve allows . Infact thats the theme of the road, it has a degree of daring and danger that I have rarely come across, wide fast corners tempt more speed, some good visibility into tight turns tempt later braking and best of all the flow is uninterrupted for 10 or so miles. I had a very good time this afternoon

For me, its the Cat & Fiddle pass in the Macclesfield > Buxton direction.
Come out of Macc, lots of twisty bits on a steep uphill incline. Some second gear hairpins, some third gear straights. Some real bum-clenching braking opportunities - all with stunning views and scenery.
Then, just as you're tiring of the accelerate / brake / acclerate / brake monotony, you come over a crest by the pub, and the road is straight and open for about a mile and a half, with no obstruction to visibility for the whole of that length.
The speed limit for the first section up to the pub is 50, then national a short while after that. Last time over, I saw 100 several times un the way up, and 145 on the way down.
True roller-coaster of a road.
However, treat it with a little respect - its claimed many lives, mostly bikers. Also, plod uses a helicopter at weekends, cos the open nature of the road means there's nowhere to hide the cars or the cameras.

A686 Penrith to Haydon bridge well known as one of the best driving roads in the country, espically up to Hartside with the cafe at the top. Also popular with bikers and police. That whole area accross the pennines has some excellent roads which can be very quiet on weekdays. Had a great short break up there last year hoofing it around, as per sig

The A82 from Crianlarich to Ballachulish, ahh that run down through Glen Coe with the brooding mountains around you. I also rather like the A83 from Lochgilphead down to Campbeltown, though I just keep on going for a walk on Machrihanish beach which is wonderful, followed by a pint at the Beachcomber pub. Bliss.

Any road where there aren't speed cameras, there isn't a rolling roadblock of 40mph HGVs, busses or Honda/Rover drivers and is a little bit interesting. The road from Worcester to Hereford is quite fun, especially the bit where there are self-lit cats eyes so you can switch your lights completely off and still hammer along in the middle of the night. Freaks out the other road users though.

2nd that one Nigel, its a fantastic road, I'd been to the cat and fiddle a couple of times before I actually carried on down the other side into macclesfield, what a great bit of road. I also like Porlock hill on the road to Ilfracoombe some great views from the top. Even my series two landrover made itup there once! The best bit of road locally to me is the road out of Market Bosworth, past the water park and some nice long sweeping bends and a long open stretch great for overtaking especially on the bend at the bottom of the hill. Going to go and get the bike out now as the sun had got his hat on

You gotta be havin a laugh mate. That road has to have the bumpiest, most undriveable straights I have ever been on. As for the brooding mountains, they are just great big piles of brown stuff !!!
Far better (and greener) part of the A82 is Fort Augustus to Inverness. Avoid the tourist season though, as its full of Camper vans going at 40 mph (when I say full, I mean FULL, and when I say 40 mph, I mean 40 mph max). Best to do it on a dry, off season day at the crack of dawn. Start at Fort William (or somewhere in the South) and make your way North, to sunny Inverness
.....trust me, nothing will beat it.

Yesterday I took the South Deeside Road out all the way to Loch Muick, leaving early meant the roads where empty, the scenery out of this world, and Loch Muick needs to be seen to be believed, oh, the joys of living in Scotland

Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, the way the tourists *don't* go... A9 -> Tore, A835 -> Garve, A832->Achnasheen, A890 -> Strathcarron, A890 -> Auchtertyre, A87 -> Kyle. Of course, it's a road for *driving* on as opposed for simply aiming and booting it, so there's a mix of dual carriageway to start, *fast* A road with excellent visibility, a small amount of single track, and fast A again at the end. Stunning views all the way... And I can't agree with Steve in Fort William... Once you've *got* to Fort William, of course, because there's a really grim bit between Ballachulish and FW which looks straight on the map but is almost impossible to overtake on. But the run from Tyndrum over Rannoch Moor and into Glencoe (when the tourists or the Road Agency don't make it impossible) is great, and even better, from Spean Bridge to Kyle on the A82/A87 over Garrymore and Cluanie and Kintail Not that I'm jealous of you folk in the Highlands, oh no... b'stards Neil

Unfortunately, in the Southeast particularly, there are very few roads good for the Coop anymore. Not because the roads are crap, just the 40 mile an hours everywhere, or speed camera hysteria. I've noticed the further away you get from the SouthEast, the less these issues seem to crop up though. So more longer touring on the cards, I think. There are actually still some fantastic country routes through Abridge and Ongar, but your best to avoid these roads unless between normal hours (unless you want to be stuck behind Mr/Mrs MPV at 40mph.

Yes a very Good run .. Although this is the road which killed the enigne in my coupe 18 months back ... This was as i was coming from the Kendal direction heading towards shap, going down into the big dip reaching silly speeds keep the foot hard down all the way up the 3/4-1 mile twisty climb, as I was coming to the summet I heard flapping noises which sounded like the engine cover flapping underneath the car, as I slowed down the noises became more clear and load knocking could be heard .. anyhow thats been done and dusted now...
Have you carried on along the A6 thru shap to Eamont bridge and just passed there on the roundabout before reaching Penrith head off on the A686 towards Alston? Absolutely stunning road, similar to the cat n fiddle. Hartside pass as its known is a well maintaned tight and twisty road full of nice hidden hairpins leading up to the cafe at the summet, a great place to meet for a brew and a chat!! The twisty roads cary on down the other side of the cafe towards Alston, from there we head on the B6277 towards Middleton in teesdale, across to Brough, Kirkby Stephen, Sedbergh and finally dropping back down into Kendal...
If you like the A6 to Shap then its well worth the extra miles up to hartside for a brew ...
View of the windy roads from the cafe ..

Sori Neil, but I wasn't talking about Ballahulish to Fort William, the part I was refering to is Fort Augustus to Inverness. This is the last 30 miles of the A82, running North alongside Loch Ness.

Ah Steven, misunderstood you about the Loch Ness road - the only sane way to do that is with blue lights on top. Trogs doing 35mph and a piper in every bloody layby AH, at least I usually get up onto Skye a couple of times a year to see the parents... Nice pic on Leven, btw... Neil
