Is this a vis or n/a? #1184925

Well I'm thinking of getting a coupe again. I do regret selling my 20vt a year ago and would really like another. I have the chance to get one (maybe) and am considering a non turbo as I don't think I have the cash for a good 20vt.

I've seen a nice looking 20v on auto trader. 1999 model and I'm wondering if it is the VIS engine? The dealer didn't seem to know. Were all 20v n/a cars from 1999 onwards vis, or might it be a standard n/a? Dunno if there's any way to tell other than looking at the engine?

It looks a nice car, needs a cambelt change though.

Advert clicky

yes

And the other clues, as hinted at by Reuben, but needed to check that it wasn't just someone who had fitted VIS wheels and colour coded their own sills.

Looks nice enough in the pictures though.

Well I went to take a look at this one this afternoon, so I thought I would share what I thought of it with everyone in case they were wondering too. Needless to say I didn't buy it.

The guy selling seemed to be genuine, but there car needs a lot of work and he wasn't accepting a low offer.

Main points:
- Needs cambelt (last changed at 40k-ish in 2004)
- Needs new clutch
- Needs all new brakes
- Needs all new tyres and tracking sorted
- Rust around the wheel arches
- Dent at the front of the bonnet

Other than the small rust and the dent, the bodywork was pretty good though. It's true what they say too, the 20v vis sounds great smile

So apart from those jobs that need doing it's not bad, but all that amounts to quite a lot of money. I offered the guy £700 but he wasn't interested. It owes him more money as he took it as part-ex I think?

Anyway, my search continues. Admin, feel free to move this in to buying/selling or whatever?

Ouch, that's some shopping list of work, would be at least £1.5k's worth.

There are some cracking VIS's out there for less than £1.5k, keep your eyes peeled on the for sale thread.

Debatable that it's worth the £700 you offered, such is the market right now, sadly.

Wonder who bought the red 20v na that I mentioned in buying and selling on fleabay - that looked good?

Actually I'm considering a 20vt now. I'd take a good vis, but I took this one for a test drive and it didn't feel right not having that kick at 2.5k! It made me smile, but not as much as a turbo would tongue

Decisions, decisions...

Don't worry I've seen enough good and bad coupes to know when to turn around and walk away. There's plenty more out there. To be honest I offered 700 knocking off prices for the work off the top of my head, knowing he wouldn't say yes anyway. I still wouldn't have bought it.

Shame really as the late spec vis are getting very rare now but still just about worthless. Don't blame you walking though, I scrapped probably the last registered vis as it just wasn't worth fixing cost wise.

If you're still looking for a vis be aware that most have the same wheels and bodywork as an early NA, the only spot is under the bonnet.

Still love my vis 3 years down the line and cheap insurance as well wink

If all else fails read the instructions

Those are late VIS alloys Joe - in fact, that car looks like a late VIS, not a 16v na as it's advertised?
