Having read the 16VT Knowledge, Im still a little unclear. Im not out for massive power, up to 280bhp maybe? Just wondering which of these turbos would be best suited for the 16VT.

Normally I'd say a 50-trim T04e would the one to go for. But if you definitely only want to go up to about 280bhp then the 60 trim T3 would be a good option.

Physically it's almost the same size as the standard turbo. So it shouldn't get in the way of the gearbox, like a T34 does.

The .48 a/r option would mean the turbo would spool up pretty much as fast as the standard turbo.

I see they do a Cosworth fitting turbine housing, but .72 a/r sounds to 'big' for a fast-road setup. I think it wouldn't spool until high rpms and would also have too much lag. That's a shame because you'll have to have a custom dowpipe made to fit any of the other turbine housings.

t3 super 60 is what you want.... Perfect for 280 bhp! Aslong as you have 2.5" or bigger down pipe + flea or kj map..... Should see 280bhp with the same if not a few more ft lb's of torque!

what KJ said for a first chioce - get the T04e 50 trim, I would say a .48 hotside with a stage 2 turbine.

This is what i was running and while the compressor is 400-450bhp capable the hotside will choke it over 300bhp - however spool will be good.

I have tried the smaller options, Mitsi 16G, T04b S trim, and the T04E is certainly the pick IMO

Like KJ said though the T04e cover is bigger and means turbo off if you need to remove the gearbox to say do the clutch which is not the same as OE

BTW - the 60 trim these guys are talking about is a t3 60 trim, not a T04E 60 trim, the later is not good IMO

Sorry - should have been more complete - I had the Mitsi 16G machined into the T3 cover - pervious run on standard turbo 240bhp (engine) - whereas the below dyno plot are @ wheels

Here are the dyno plot after the swap - not impressive, needless to say it didn't last long but I am lucky I have a mate who is turbo reconditioner (176bhp wheels @ 19psi) - was the same chip from memory

I think a super 60 may well be my best option. Are these super 60s? Seems there are a few different Sierra Cosworth turbos.

Nick, Ive sent you a PM.

Should be good for 280bhp-300bhp at 7000rpm and 1.4bar (@ 65% effcency) which is about what Nick got I think - maybe 305bhp with a ported head ??. However nick had alot of other mods so a 280bhp IMHO unless you really push it

T34 doesn't get in the way of the gearbox, not sure why you think it did?

Er, because it does! The compressor housing comes out in front of one of the gearbox bolts, so it means that if you want to remove the gearbox then you also have to remove the exhaust manifold and turbo - as Saint explained. And as I just had to do to change the clutch.

The T04e cover is bigger than a T04b cover - maybe the t04b cover is O.K.? I don't know as I never the removed the gearbox with the t04b on the car, but the T04e is a turbo off job to get the gearbox out
