hi well after a day at alton towers i have found out that i have lost my keys its a 96 16v turbo with a k-9 alarm fortunatly i have looked though my sevices history and have found a card with what i am hoping is my key codess it has an electronic code and a mechanical code , does this mean i can get a new cut cut and code put init ? , any other help as to how i can solve this problem would be loads of help

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I fear that you're going to need a new key, which will also mean a new lockset and if you're really unlucky, a new ECU as well

thats ok i wasnt really exspecting good news , only one good thing is my alram isnt ativated because its been playing up, after reading the buyers guide it says that some early 96 models are diffrent with the red key set up , just wondering if anybody knows how there diffrent and what these key code cards are for

I believe the key cards are to manually override the fiat code system. There is a guide some where about an emergency start up procedure using the key card and pressing down the accelerator pedal corasponding to the key code card.

Neil is correct however I have never heard of being able to get a key cut from the documentation, and you can only code a new key using the red master key....

In short, depending on year the quickest way is to get a second hand lock set and ecu, if the ecu proves to be difficult, you can send it away to have the key code system deactivated

No I think you can get a key from fiat but the cost is extreme, they should apparently keep the code and key paten on record for each chassis number, you have to provide multiple ID, prof of ownership and the papers for the car and have a wedge of cash.

The method of starting the car by manually inputting the code is detailed on page 126 of the 16VT user handbook, but you do need a key to turn the ignition barrel.

That's kind of a written pete! just like you would need the key to get in to the car in the first instance

Is the master red key really vital then? Only, I'm going to look at a 16vt this week without the red key. Is it a walk away thing or more a major haggling issue?

Just don't fancy getting stuck with a car that wont start etc if something goes wrong. I'm guessing problems only arise if the esc goes pear shaped?

The only time that I have required the Red Key is to use as the master when having a new Blue Key cut and then using it to code all the keys into the car.

It is possible to have a new key "Cloned" from an existing blue or silver key but, at a cost.

Warning to all! If you only have one key for your coupe, get a lock smith to clone it and get a few keys done, don't risk it!

I've got the spangly blue and rather regular black thing both keys start the car, battery disconnects not a problem, alarm keys too (round type) and key fobs.

Does anybody know how much would it be to clone a key and where it can be done? Plus if I clone some keys is that as good as having the red one or could I still encounter problems in the future?

I'm veiwing a 1996 N reg 16vt tomorrow and could do with some knowledge!

any good key cutters ,timpsons etc.i paid £35 for a key to be cloned

Cheers for the reply mate. I'm assuming they clone a key off an existing one right? Apologies if that sounds dull, it's just the only Fiat I've ever owned is a MK1 Uno Turbo and that was way before the red key faffing!
