My fiancee wants to change cars. We initially thought that the best time to do this would be in Jan when the MOT will be done on her old car, thereby making it more attractive to buyers.

However, I've realised her insurance year finishes in March. If we change in Jan and cancel that insurance then presumably it will be 10 months of NCD down the drain as the insurers only issue for complete years IIRC.

Is there a way around this at all or would it be necessary to keep the old car until March? If we buy a new car before then I assume it would have to wait in storage or be put on short term and expensive insurance in the meantime before the NCD could be used on it.

A tricky problem, but I guess one which people face from time to time.

I guess it may be an option to stay with her current insurer, and pay an "upgrade" fee for the remainder of the time. Is that possible, and do the insurance companies usually try and put you over the barrel at this point or are they reasonable about it?

Cheers for any advice.

Steve
