If you have a standard turbo then the de-cat will quicken the rate that the oil seals deteriorate, if the seal are on the way out then I would give you 3 months before the smoke becomes embarrassing. Also I’m not convinced that the decat will produce a noticeable difference to performance. I ran without, then with one and could not tell the difference, apart from the noise

My turbo smoked within about two minutes of being started without a cat - it hadn't smoked at all prior to then.

Good excuse to buy a hybrid or roller bearing turbo though

I've been running with no cat for months and it is fine (touch wood)

Mine is a 16VT so has a T3 turbo - don't kn ow if this makes a difference.

If it blows the seals good excuse for a hybrid

Cheers

I recently had a custom exhaust made and the guys that did it where going to do a full system but I told them about what I'd read on here like the oil seals etc and they agreed. Only decat with a bigger turbo. That Simple.

im running for more than a month with a De-cat, no problems up to now, but i notice a lot of back fire from the exhaust, after a hard drive (i hope this is normal!! )

by the way, i love the increase in the performance and the lovely sound too

i used to run with a supersprint decat pipe (part silenced) and ragazzon exhaust. really miss the sound on boost but will only decat again when i upgrade the turbo.

always embarassing when stuck in traffic jams and a plume of white smoke bellowing out the back...

Just out of interest and kinda related but when the seals on a turbo start to go do you get smoke on boost, off boost or just all the time?

I feel a project comming on.

Worse is when idling, especially when the engine's cold. You get plumes of what looks like steam and it's really, really embarrasing at the lights
You also get some smoke when booting it, but when you lift off you get another plume of white smoke. It's only good if you are James Bond in a getaway scene

Mine on standard turbo and running with 2.5" from turbo with no cat for 8 months with no smoking problem. Only side effect is better response and pulls harder. As Saint pointed out we run T3 turbos so don't know if thats the diffrence. Only dislike is that its too quite on par with standard so may take off the centre muffler and run staright pipe to rear muffler.
