Took my Thema for the remap yesterday.

I'm astonished! I kept the KAT, standerd exhaust and air box too!

It made 329bhp and 286ft/lb torque!

Power is beyond belief!

Check out the dyno graph photo link below:

http://s32.photobucket.com/albums/d43/lanciaturbo/?action=view&current=65f5a580.jpg

Thanks for all the advice and help on the forum guys!

This is a road sleeper...

I have now got bigger injectors (384cc EVO 1) and a GT28RS Turbocharger. I have also removed the S3 Turbo head which is usless due it being a green engine with tiny inlet valves and replaced it with a proper large valved one (EVO 1). In order to use the hotter Tipo Mk1 cam I have re-located the phase sensor to the inlet side of the engine (as per Evo 1's) and used the worn inlet cam as the new exhaust.

The car drives just great on the road with great power on demand!

Thanks. 1.4 bar boost - but more boost does not always = more power.

Hmmm.... at that power i would be very worried about fuelling the injectors at that level!

Also to improve your spool up, get a decent exhaust and air filter on there and push the power figure up a bit more

Was told the best value for more power would be a charge cooled intercooler...

next phase may be a supercharger! I'll phone Auto Delta later!

amazing ! Did you kept the standard pistons ?

I'm interested to know more about relocating the phase sensor... Is it easy ?

Can you poste some pics of the engine please ?

By the way anyone knows what is necessary to change the standard T3 to the GT28RS Turbo?
And the better trim for it?

To ALL - a new PROBLEM!! >>

Part throttle boost the car seems to shudder (it prefers all or nothing).

I think this is something to do with the resirculation valve messing up... I hope this can be fixed with harder/ softer internal springs?

I am unsure and require advice... help appreciated

ps. PAULINHO: To fit the GT28RS is a massive job! To use the standerd manifoild I found a company that made an adaptor, thre were another 14 bespoke parts made!

JMA: To relocate the phase sensor I had to use my old (worn) inlet cam as the new exhaust, the phase sensor then had to be adjusted. This is the same setup as on EVO 1's, I think the Fiats may already be like EVO 1?

In the Fiat engine, the sensor is on the exhaust cam. I think it's the same on evo. So do you mean that the sensor is fitted on the inlet cam in the thema engine ?

Yes, originally the Thema phase sensor was on the inlet cam, it is a wierd setup on the themas!

I have also been told (which I did not do) that most people who fit the Tipo cam should be advanced 4º. That's about one tooth on Thema/ Integrale 16V cam gear.

If you use the Tipo cam it should just drop in.

Good turbos to be found here:

Very interesting point here. So I can fit a thema 16V turbo inlet cam as an exhaust cam right ? Do you know where I could find a thema inlet cam ?

Did you adjust the timings ?

Did not adjust the timing no, pretty sure you could just use your old inlet cam instead of sourcing and buying a Thema cam (may be the same).

Someone told me that if I had used the standerd cams my turbo spool would have been better, however these is a lot of guess work here, to do things properly you could buy some C&B cams.

My old inlet cam is worn and I would need to machine the coupe inlet cam to fit the sensor on it. The thema cam is a more bolt on solution. The thema cams timings are slighly different than the coupe ones : 8/42 instead of 8/35 (both have 8.6 lift)

If interested I found a company building nice vernier pulley at a decent price. They are machining standard pulleys and use a custom center section.

You also forgot to re-iterate what was said on the grale forum, that one tooth is more than 4 degree's more like 7 degrees was it not?

############## UPDATE! #################

OK guys....

New question. I want much better turbo spool (e.g. 1500 rpm boost to begin), not top end power, the GT28RS is to fierce! It scares me!

What is a better spooling turbo and more powerful turbo than the standerd 16v unit?

I was thinking about changing my 500 mile old GT28RS 60 A/R for a GT28R 54 A/R

Info here: GT2854R:

http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/catelog/Turbochargers/GT28/GT2854R_471171_9.htm

Current GT2860RS:

http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/catelog/Turbochargers/GT28/GT2860RS_739548_1.htm

What do you all think?

Well neither turbo will give you 1500rpm spool up!

If your wanting that, your going to need a smaller turbo, probably smaller than the std 16vt or 20vt turbo!

Improve spool up:

Smaller turbo
Machine current turbo to optimize the gas flow
Large bore exhaust
5 stud turbo outlet
Machine the stadnard manifold or gas flow it
Optimixe the intake pathway
Free flwing intercooler
Increase compression ratio
Gas flow cylinder head

The GT28r should give you a few hundred rpm benefit in spool up, but you will lose some top end power with it.
In the summer spool up will be a lot worse as well, so have to consider in the Winter it will be a lot better

Joe

Begbie, surely there are other turbos rather than the GT series that are good for the 16vt?, what about the EVO turbos or the TD05 from the Subarus??

EVO as in itchypussies or lancia's?

If you refer to the scoobies or itchypussies, they have twin scroll and as discussed last week, too much effort. If you refering to the lancia, then yes, bolt straight on, but he wont get a "1500rpm boost to begin" i doubt you will even get that with the 28R/S GT turbo's.

God even you 20vt's are moaning about lag till 3000rpm with your 28's, so it will be worse on a 16vt

remember normal 20VT has max torque at 2500 rpm so isnt laging untill 3000 rpm

Old td05 from lancer and subaru (td05) are single scroll. They are rated to 350-400bhp with nice spooling figures. I'm fitting one of these at the moment !

16VT engine is a long stroke engine so will have more low end than a 20VT. You can use a Cometic head gasket (1mm thick) on 16VT to slightly increase CR.
