As many of you will be aware, I've had a bit of bad luck with the old 16VT frown Originally thought turbo - then started misfiring, now appears to be Piston rings.

After much discussion with Joe, originally about an engine transplant, I've decided to part ex my broken beauty in for his Porto 20VT he is selling.
Thanks to Joe for being a top bloke! thumb

My 16VT has been a labour of love (as all are) but it's just got too much trying to keep her running at all, never mind smoothly, so I shall pass her over to Joe for some much needed TLC, spannering and expertise.

And take over the duties of the 20VT that has already had the initial TLC, spannering and expertise.

Thursday cannot come soon enough - let's see if the 16VT can make it there under her own steam, or whether I arrive rather ungraciously on the back of a tow truck (4 hour drive!)

Long Live the FIAT Coupe!

That's the reason I'm going to him Sam - seems a trustworthy fella! Joe reckons he can save the 16VT - it needs some work though!

Insy - I know you originally had your eye on this car, sorry it didnt work out for you frown

Seems fated (that's how I'm justifying it, ha!) that at the exact time I was in need of a replacement vehicle - and can't think of ANYTHING else I want other than a coupe.

I can't wait to pick her up - but will be very sad to see the 16VT go, a lot of blood and cauterised flesh under that bonnet! hehe

The next pervy step is fitting a sunblind and monster rear mudflaps. biglaugh

I'm so tempted to say something Stan - but you swore me to secrecy!!!!

I've got the sunblind on order already Rob - been thinking about it since the meet laugh (note - not really!)

She's staying standard! Mostly - Joe is gunna swap my exhaust over from the 16VT - paid too much for that to loose it - suspect it might be too loud on the 20VT. What am I saying? no such thing as too loud - for me anyway - god help people behind me trying to listen to their "boom tish boom" awesome music!

Getting this car is turning out to be a lot of hassle - and today has been one of my most stressful days of all time - BUT, still going tomorrow!

If it wasn't for the 16v Coupe, there may not have been the 16vt, 20v and 20vt.

I'm grateful to all those who bought the 16v Coupe all those years ago, which probably influenced Fiat to make the versions that followed.

Well in that case, I would also like thank Ferdinand Verbiest from Belgium as he was one of the first documented inventors of the car. In the year 1672 he built the car or 'self propelled vehicle that was actually powered by steam.

Thanks Ferdinand for my 20VT thumb

Well - she's home!

Didn't manage to avoid the snow grr

So havn't really had a chance to test her out to her full potential yet.

Sounds lovely with the exhaust on! Though the 16VT sounded far better without one on at all hehe

Massive thanks to Joe and friend (sorry, I've forgotten his name - very tired you know - driven for 9 hours today!!!).
Thanks for all the coffee!

Next time I'll wear 4 pairs of socks aswell!

We'll see if my opinion sways that way also!

So far - I actually enjoy the harsh "rip your balls off" acceleration of the 16VT over the "You know - I COULD rip your balls off, but I won't 'cos I'm refined see!" 20VT!

Tomorrow off work so shall spend the afternoon driving and playing! After I've recovered from today's 05:30 start - and then getting home at 19:30of course!

Cheers for the welcome to the common as muck 20VT club folks! hehe

no, the t3 I believe is bigger than the t28 the 20vt uses. so with the 16vt you get more of that old school nothing, nothing, nothing, well, I better visit my local tyer specialist!

i thought so - which makes the "rip your balls off" comment inaccurate, as i expect eks to discover soon....

yes these are refined cars, but please don't underestimate the "wolf in sheeps' clothing" performance capability. certainly when i boot mine the level of acceleration is more than enough for any circumstances most people will ever encounter, i love it cool

I often wonder why Fiat bothered making a 5 cylinder 20VT? If the 16VT was so good, why bother adding a more refined engine in the first place? laugh

Here we go here we go here we go......... laugh laugh

Because the 4 or 5 pot modular engine was cheaper to build?

<Steps back rapidly>

16VT and X1/9 1500

We must all do our part for the planet.

Well, I have just taken her for a "proper" spirited drive, and still stick by preferring the 16VT power delivery. as Sam but it "nothing, nothing, nothing, well, I better visit my local tyer specialist!"

That doesn't mean I don't however enjoy the 20VT - quite on the contrary. My Coupe love has been reinstated!

I didn't mean to start the age old 16VT vs 20VT argument again - just making my opinions known!

Now, needs a good wash after the ridiculous amounts of grit dumped on the Motorways yesterday!

No sorry I've owned both and the 16vt certainly has that "rip your balls off" kick in the face harsh acceleration that the 20vt lacks.

My opinion of course! smile

Sorry to re-open the thread. Lovely 20vt matey, enjoy it!

your opinion diddy and you're welcome to it - but i still don't understand how a car that accelerates slower than another can somehow seem more aggressive. there's no logic to it and no amount of opinion can change facts wink

Drive one and you'll see especially with the old Evocars chip! It's hilarious fun. Regardless of facts and figures, the cars both put power down differently but on the road there's really not much in it with similar mods. Trust me I know.

There's something for you to have a look at Proccy!

I produced the video myself, just put picture in picture so to speak. Same stretch of road, 16vt vs 20vt with similar mods and very similar power on the same rolling road. Both cars owned and driven by me.

That gives you some idea as to just how much more aggressive the 16vt's power delivery really is, oh and the fact there really wouldn't be much in it.

Mods move this to a new topic if you think neccessary as I won't give up just yet tongue

good man.... laugh

but even the graphics at the end of your vid say " not much in it" or words to that effect so i say i'm right - ie, the 16vt is no more aggressive than the 20vt wink

Well Proccy just to point out. No idea if it is accurate...

It maybe that the 16vt has a fast acceleration at certain points than the 20vt.

The 16 may do nothing for a second or so then the power all arrives. Whereas the 20vt maybe more linear. Just an idea smile

Thanks for the comments in amongst the arguing guys - stop hijacking my thread - however, to add to the argument,

The 16VT does seem more brutal - The 20vt (at least the one I have!) has little to no lag when the gearing is correct - just straight up power. The 16vt does nothing for 5 seconds and everything in the last 2 it seems! It feels quicker (yes I know it's not - that's obvious from the fact that the 20VT is faster!), it feels more brutal - and comes with a LOT more engine noise than the 20.

I do still prefer the acceleration on the 16, the brutal raw power. The 20 is obviously superior in the power department, but it IS more subtle - let's not forget I only drove the two variants last thursday, within hours of each other, and the 16 was very very sick - it still felt more brutal and raw!

However I'm loving the lack of lag with the 20VT, and may one day change my opinion, after all, I lived with the 16VT for nearly a year, I havn't had the 20VT for a week yet!

So - guys - please, cease the arguing, no one can win the argument over who's opinion is best suited.
My opinion is my own opinion, it just happens I share it with DidCoop and not the 20VT fans! Until the 20VT changes my opinion, it still stands that I, at the moment, prefer the power delivery of the 16VT.

Now - can we have more gushing remarks at what a lovely Coupe I have - and what a fantastic job Joe has done on getting it to this state! Well done Joe thumb

Don't worry Eks it's been said a million and 1 times the 16vt gives a brutal kick in the teeth when it suddenly comes on boost and the 20vt surges through the rev range more subtly.

People always comment the 16 FEELS faster than the 20 when it standard trim stock for stock it's obviously not.

And your Coupe is marvellous Eks smile

ummm well Ive always said and will continue the 16vt is the best coupe produced it has best acceleration the best steering and more responsive brakes dispite being slightly heavier than the 20vt.

All the 20vt's ive played with in and side by side werent a disapointment just not as exciting like driving in a turbo charged arm chair

If each of them had a personality

20vt Its a person who would sit and read the finacial times and coment on global warming and sits in front of a open fire with a smoking jacket on and a pipe the name for this personality OAP with jogging shoes

16vt well loves a good piss up and a brawler and wouldn't hesitate to deck you and it also has a gentle side it ill buy you chocolates and flower and then be more cruel to you afterwards and a complete Adrenalin rush every time you go for a ride evil the name for this personality Beelzebub and is like that one night stand you always remember and want back.

LOL!!!

After reading this thread and the comparison between the 20vt and 16vt, I have a new found respect for the 16vt.

Previously I just used to think that it was 'not as fast as the 20vt.'

16VT = better weight distribution (20VT is a heavier engine)
Better weighted steering
Better turning circle
Better brakes with more feel
All round better handling

Whats a 20VT got? 30 more BHP (which you can get from a 16VT just by turning the boost up a little!)

Keep your 30BHP - you've still got a van engine in your car!

Yeah DidCoop I was being genuine. smile

But there are too many 20vt jokes going on and I just have to join in the fun lol.

Here is a video the 16vt owners may find interesting.

Its a bit like putting Albert Einstein's brain into Homer Simpson - but not having the desired effect. DOH! rofl

It's funny it took what mid-4th to overtake. Not to mention a standard Lancia Delta Integrale has 200bhp out of the box, is 4WD, lighter and has more torque.

The engine in both is the same though setup differently obviously..

Thanks T! wondered when someone sensible (really?) would swoop in and save the thread!
Thanks Sam for trying and being ignored!
Thanks to everyone for comments and an interesting "debate" tongue

I guess, like a stereotypical Italian, I've switched sides when the going got tough with the 16vt! Not bad going though, from deciding to get a new coupe to picking her up took under 3 weeks! oh and a 9 hour round trip, 3 litres of oil!!! (the 16vt *may* have been burning it and leaking a tiny bit, ahem) and 90 quid in fuel.

I miss Bestia (my 16vt) and Belano isn't a replacement as such. Who knows, if Joe manages to save Bestia I may just buy her back one day! thumb

20 is more than 16.

In this life, for some reason, more is better.

The difference between 20 & 16 is 4 (I have always been good at maths)

The 20VT has 5 and the 16VT has 4

The difference between 5 & 4 is 1 (Used a calculator for this one)

Therefore the 20VT is 5 times better than the 16VT

Come on guy's, it's all in the math!

FTW

LOL! I've said it before and I'll say it again - try giving that argument to Coupe_Integrale. He's only got 8v which by your reckoning would make his car half as good as mine? Funny then that his car is the only car on this entire forum that I'd ever want to own!

PS Coupe_integrale would make your LE look like it's going backwards on the track . . .but there again my little MX5 would do that rofl

Anyway . . .nice car Eks and good to have a comparison from someone who's actually driven BOTH models for a change thumb

I do believe we took the p*** out of most people Rob - it's something we had in common, being miserable old farts (and I'm only 23!) laugh (note to everyone - it was all in jest!)

Murple cars go faster - the proof is in my car going faster than the 1.2 Saxo behind me earlier. It must have been the colour, nowt else can explain it!

I didn't particularly fancy the colour before, but now appreciate it far more, useful really!

Perhaps it was to prove that the Coupe could work just as well with an old school 1970s designed motor with (distributor, plug leads & bucket tappets) as it could with a much more modern unit (Coil packs, Hydraulic tappets & variable cam timming).

I would love to see a 16v owner go properly old school though and rip off the injection system. Imagine the sound of a 16v breathing through a couple of twin webers cool

That just proves what we already know - nobody is arguing the fact that the 16VT is slower than the 20VT.

What we are saying is the power deliver is VERY much different, 0-62 in 6.5 seconds is, well, I can only say boring compared to the violence of the 16VT 0-62 a second slower.

It's been a week now living with the 20VT - and I still prefer the 16VT power delivery. AND - contrary to what everybody else on here says, I prefer the noise of the 16VT as well.

The 20VT has less soul and passion than the 16VT for me.

Heh - what do I know, only owned them both, and drove them both within hours of each other.

I understand I'm not allowed an opinion that differs from the 20VT bods (oh wait, I AM a 20VT bod) so I don't know why I'm even bothering explaining that I HAVE A DIFFERING OPINION to some other people on here.

The Fiat Coupe is an amazing car in all it's guises, we all love them for similar and different reasons. Why bicker and nit pick over the trivialities?

Anyway - many thanks to everybody for hijacking this thread, been told to stop, by myself and a moderator, and continuing on regardless, just because a few of us don't share exactly the same tastes as you.
To those that actually stayed on topic thumb

Can we just lock this thread please, it's been completely hijacked beyond repair.
