thinking about putting a personal plate on my coop. nothing related to me but the car.

I'm thinking of getting "W20VTP" as it's 20v Turbo Plus. by having W it keeps the original plate year.

My sister has got an MG and bought hers with the MG in the plate which got me thinking about it, although part of me thinks it's a complete waste of 400 quid!

I think I've only seen 1 personal plate on a coop being an LE, so seemed appropriate. perhaps the turbo plus is just that not special enough to warrant it??

I've considered this option from time to time over the last year and have concluded that it is something of a waste of money as there are other things that I could spend that cash on to improve it mechanically.

That said I would still like one. From time to time, when I've had a few pints, I wheel the credit card out. I have, as yet, however not gone through with any sort of purchase.

All depends, could be viewed as a waste of money but if you have the cash and the plate means something to you then why not.

I don't ever anticipate parting with mine, and under the circs I thought it was a bit of a bargain:

a personal plate would be worth it, if its personal to you, not the car.

Thanks MrC, yes, it is a bit special, I still get a huge kick from driving it. Got to hand it to CarlT for the condition it's in today, wouldn't be there without him.

I liked the idea of a personalised plate as the design of the car still looks fresh, even after all these years. It de-ages the car and lets people who have "how old!" syndrome, see the car, not it's age. I agree a personal plate is portable , but there are no badges for people to say "Oh thats a......" so it might give them an idea whats just overtaken them smile
I have an LE with the plate - F14T LE - It makes the car look showroom, so I'm pleased with mine, even if it does go with the car. I've had plenty of posative comments from other people about it, but at the end of the day, it's down to you and your budget.

I managed to get a free private plate! P88 JUE, doesn't take much imagination (or modification) to make it say JOE.
It came in on a car I bought to break and I transferred it on to mine. Unsure about it now though as it makes my W reg look like a P reg, but then I could always sell it. Searched some number plate websites and they want £900 for something similar i.e with the same letters at the end, I certainly wouldn't have paid that much.

I always quite fancied one but they used to be sooo expensive. However since the DVLA have latched on to them being a good money-making scheme I was amazed at how much they have come down in price and Mrs Nello is getting me a 5 digit plate for Xmas with my intitials on for not much more than £200!!

This place are good : Private Plates

They have the reg [ 20 V ] for just under £10K if anyones feeling flush!
Remember seeing a fabbo Chrono LE with the reg C20V LE.............

Also I meant to say that when I contacted some plate websites about selling the plate on (before I decided to keep it)some of them said that if it went on their website I would have to be open to offers on it. So don't just pay the price they state online, ring up and haggle!

Nello, are you ringing them or me?..... WOW ! wink

By the way, their super looking deals of "Was xxxx now only xx" are nothing more than the various DVLA costs stripped out (and then added back in rolleyes )

wink

I have a personalised as below.

Here in sunny Queensland, the cost varies from $415 (about 200 squids) to $2295 (approx 1000 squids) Cost depends on type of plate and combinations etc.

http://www.ppq.com.au/CreateAPlate.aspx

We have a number in my family which mostly describe the model of Fiat the plate is on.

I purchased

S111 SKH for my wife - her Initials are SKH

But i think if correctly marketed can go for a little song

To a Kebab King SHIIISKH laugh

Or if you are looking at it in another light - a member of the Indian community

S111SKH (SIKH) cool

Actually been approached by a couple of Indian folks about this...

Someone was selling OAN13L on ebay for ten grand or best offer. I offered £500 but didn't hear back which I thought was strange laugh

I have been stopped once for my plate as spaced D4N xx, and that was only because I ended up between 2 motorcycle officers out training. He was a good one though and gave me just a warning as the plate spelt Dan (well it doesn't, it clearly displays Delta Four November as I don't use dodgy screws).

If you can afford one I'd get one, it makes your car more personal and individual, though this is something which the government don't seem to like.

As it wasn't for sale anywhere, I did an insurance quote to find out what it was on:

FORD FIESTA 1.4D (03 ON) GHIA 5DR 1398cc 5DR

grr

Well, after having a tax rebate on last months paycheck I decided to waste it on a personal plate!

I went for "H20 VTP" in the end, hides the year of the car and i tried to justify to myself that the fiat coupe is a rare car and the plus model/LE is even rarer smile and what with the car having had a full expensive respray and complete leather retrim, the plate finishes the car off style wise.

cost £245 all in from the DVLA website, I considered "C20 VTP" but that was £390 and I didn't want to spend that much.

thats the coops christmas present!

yeah, probably right.. it's a lot more stricter than it used to be.

still, to an untrained eye it's clearly a personal plate and to a trained eye .. it's the 20v turbo plus model .. can't go wrong, winner!

They won't. Plus you have to take the veh reg doc in to prove you own it. However there are sellers on Ebay which offer show plates which can have spacing altered. For when you're not on the public highway of course!

Disclaimer: DVLA do not allow plates to be modified to appear to read as something else. This despite the fact that those plates which can be are more expensive rolleyes

I believe it's now illegal to make 'show plates', too... can't recall where I saw it, though.

Ooops. Behind the curve again! Though that would explain why the plate maker at the NEC on sat wouldn't make up plates without proof of ownership!

The 'H' doesn't stand for anything, it's just the oldest prefix style plate I could find at the cheapest price. obviously the rest "20 VTP" stands for 20 valve turbo plus! I'm hoping when I get the plates made up at Halfords I can slightly space the 20VTP further out from the H!

I suppose it could stand for Hampshire, so your plate could mean ''Hampshire's 20 valve turbo plus.'' cool

I was loving the car a little too much on the way home after that photo was taken. Got pulled by the traffic cops whilst on the motorway but was let off with a warning (I've only had her 3 months as well, not good).

My girlfriends name is Heather too! .. she wants a personal plate with Hev in. I keep telling her she'll have to buy her own car to do that as she's not allowed to drive mine smile

Looking very nice, Duncan. Great pics.

Love the anonymity that personalised plates give.

Those shut lines on the car are frikkin tops. Not having seen the car the car for a bit, I'd forgotten how good it looks.

Look after her for me please, there's a good lad..

Cheers, Hedge

Isn't that rather a contradiction in terms?

Personally I've never seen the point of them, and consider the majority of cases with forced characters and incorrect spacing, well, silly.

If it were possible - per the states - to get a single word of seven or eight letters, then I might see the sense of it, but otherwise? Why bother?

A great way to hide the cars age. An ever decepting way to add to the coupe's great dating looks.

Just one way to look at it.

Well, yes, except I suspect the majority of people seeing a non-age related plate immediately thing 'what's he hiding?'

Me, I stick with the one it came with!

I want to put "B12 GRR" on my 750i because F376 TJH is just rubbish... but I have better things to spend my £400 on at the moment.

Are plate makers allowed to make them shorter if you have less characters in them?

I'm confused. A military establishment? Cosford? Surely that's RAF? tongue

Looking forward to St Athan?

I changed my P registered plate to a NI one. Mainly as it hides the age and as it was relatively cheap I thought 'why not?' smile

Also makes the car more unique, not that there are hundreds of Coupes around my area, but it does create a unique 'package'.

This was my coupe and reg a few years ago.

T20V FC

I sold it via the forum a while ago.

I personally thought it's one of the best plates you could get for a coupe. It surprised me how many people didn't get what the 'FC' stood for wink

Saw P14 TGT on a wee yellow punto last week. No idea if the punto came in a GT model but it had a GT badge on it, with a well placed yellow capped screw holding the number plate on so it read F14T GT

yes, they do come in a GT, its a 1.4 turbo

Never understood the point of putting caps in funny places to change the text, if your going to do that you may as well put what ever the hell you like on the plate!

I have two personal plates, one on retention and one on the car. "M4 AWV" on retention and "H11 FUD" on the Coupe. Theres pros and cons to having a private plate. Exclusitivity of hiding the age of the car, and perhaps making it more unique. However theres the fees of making up registration plates, transfer fee everytime you change car, retention fee if you decide you dont want it on another car-which needs renewed every year whilst of a vehicle or the DVLA claim it back, the waiting of the change of v5 etc....
