as above, i have gambled on a fleabay chip, just wondering,
on my 20v the chip pulled out of the ecu unit and i just swapped old with new.
is this the same on the 16v? as i am writing this i realise i could just go outside and have a look but im lazy and its dark!
thanks guys

as above, i have gambled on a fleabay chip, just wondering if my engine will survive. Corrected for you I wouldn't risk it - modifying the fuelling and ignition needs some kind of expertise to be safe If its an ECU chip, my guess is it will be a rip-off of someone else's, although I can't say I've ever come across a 16v N/A chip before If its a resistor mod, walk away now!

haha thanks nigel, no its advertised as a 'plug and play' job, im just curious if its the same set up in the ecu department as on my 20v. presumably its under the glove box, and i will have to prize the unit apart etc? i really should get up off my and go and look!

Get off your backside, Shiny! The ECU is inthe passenger side footwell, and the chip is a simple remove-from-socket DIP chip - but you may find it more difficult to remove. Pull it carefully straight out from the board to avoid bending/breaking any legs. You might find two small screwdrivers helpful to lever it out from each end. Note the position of the notch in one end of the chip (or possibly a small circle/dimple in one corner) and make sure the replacement goes in the same way. You might find that the legs splay a little wide on the new chip; you can *carefully* bend them by holding the chip against a hard surface and rolling them slightly. I too am curious about the chip; I've never seen one either. I've just had fun trying to find a picture: not the best, but... The chip you need is bottom right in that picture. It's labelled 888.dpda, but yours won't be.

Is this the one you've found? http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370234093262I find myself very worried that the seller seems to indicate that the same chip can be used for all five engines... trust me on this one - it can't.

I would go to a local dyno and do a power run on the OE chip, then do another power run on the "performance" chip. Compare graphs/fuelling etc. This will only show WOT differences but it’s a good start. You can check different load sites and compare if you really wanna see how the chip performs in other areas. This is what I would advise with ANY hot swap chip from ANY seller. Never assume that it will be beneficial, always test the product for yourself.

I noticed that too but then the listing reads: "Please note that picture in this listing is for representation only and actual chip(s) may differ a bit in size, shape and/or markings. You will receive it nicely and professionally packed in anti-static box. Also clear fitting instructions will be added for easy installation."

hmmmm well, installed chip today (3 times) car started but ran like a bag of old bolts, would not rev higher than 1500 rpm, and died shortly after!! tried leaving battery disconnected for an hour or so to reset the ecu, to see if it would take it, but no dice. so, now i am in a bit of a dilema, is it the wrong chip? has it been programmed wrong? is it just ? it fitted perfectly etc, so i am unsure as to what the situation with it is. have emailed the company (no reply as i write this) so will have to see what happens!!

ok well, brief update on this, company has emailed me and basically showed their complete ignorance on the matter, asking me to send my whole ecu to germany etc...
have been given full refund so will leave it at that and see what flea comes up with.
worth a punt i guess but turned out to be a dud!
