It might just be a generic picture Gaz ? Why not email Quaife and ask them.

Is the gearbox on a 20v the same as a 20vt?

The one listed won't work due to the Turbo models having the viscous coupling.

I think the assumption is that you'd remove the viscodrive if you were fitting an LSD. Might need some dummy/blank parts fabricated but should be do-able.

I would of thought they would of listed it for a 20vt if it fitted it.

when I bought mine Quaife were unaware of the similarity between the 156 V6 2.5 and the 20vt 6 speed boxes (internals are interchangable)

But not sure if that will go in the 5 speed, and you have to remove the viscous coupling. Auto Integrale did this for me, so I have no idea how it was done

I've removed viscous coupling tonight, since I've broke it:( I will be buying Quaife, just to make sure it can fit 20VT 5 speed. In case it can fit, what other parts will I be needing? Anyone? I've asked directly Quaife if their LSD can be fitted on 5 speed 20VT and guy from Quaife just sent me link for 20V LSD and said you can read all there:( I will ask again. I will update as soon as I get response from them

A friend bought the LSD of quaife to Coupe 20V, for put in a Marea 20VT (even Gearbox 5 speeds of 20VT), and did not serve the tips of axle does not fit.
Then he came into contact with the Quaife and informed them that this is LSD only to 20V N/A versions, where the tips of axle are thinner, and quaife informed had not yet a model for the specific 20VT.

Cheers,
Mathew.

Quaife built that diff a long time ago and had it listed only for an Alfa. Unknown to them, it fits a whole lot of Fiat and lancia's too. They have since updated their listings

N/A Coupes have the C510 gearbox, same as a Tipo 16V. Coupes are based on the Tipo afterall.

However for the turbo models they went with the existing turbo gearbox as used in the Thema turbo and Integrale etc. These boxes are quite a different beast, hence the Quaife diff will not fit.

Mathew,

is this the only only problem? I think axle tips could be solved, these are words of my mechanic:)

I think Kaaz could be fitted into 5speed 20VT. I didn't receive response from them, but according to them model DBA2510 is same for Alfa 156 2.5, Alfa GTV 3.0 V6 and Alfa 164.

Also have a look at Gripper LSD,s.

Autodelta use them for Alfa,s and rebrand them as their own and whack up the price to silly money and claim that its their own special diff. Not true at all.Rip Off Merchants.

I've receive response from Kaaz, they don't manufactur L.S.D for Fiat at all. Does anyone know if Alfa 156 2.5, Alfa GTV 3.0 V6 and Alfa 164 has similarity with 20VT 5speed? I just contacted Gripper, we will see

I've checked Bacci Romano

and there it says that same L.S.D goes for Lancia Thema, Fiat Coupe Turbo, Alfa 155 V6, Alfa 164, and Alfa GTV, also as I wrote before on Kaaz site same L.S.D. goes for Alfa 156 2.5, Alfa GTV 3.0 V6. Any help appreciated. Thx

As for the Alfa Q2 diff, it can be fitted to any Alfa V6 6 speed box, 6 speed 8 & 16v 1.9JTD boxes, and 5 speed 2.4JTD 10v boxes, I have the Q2 fitted to my 156 2.4 JTD,its an excellent unit.

I have been told by several sources that the Q2 will fit the Coupe 20VT as its based on the Alfa V6 gearbox, I'll know for sure in a few weeks as I hope swap the viscodrive for the Q2 in my trackday coupe

yep its great value in comparison to the Quaife, one of the Dublin lads off Alfaowner is running a Q2 on his Supercharged 156 GTA, after he killed his Quaife diff and it compares favourably.

as for my own personal experiance so far, the Q2 on Alfa is far more responsive than the Viscodrive on the coupe, it bites harder into the corners, downside is the slight tugging and pulling at the wheel on uneven roads

Now that is interesting. £280 is a lot less than £700. I see they do plate LSD as well. I think i'll give them a call.

I'd be interested to see how you get on Marco - I'm beginning to think that a standard viscous coupling isn't beefy enough to work properly with 400bhp - in the current damp weather, I'm spinning up the inside wheel a lot more easily than I remember doing last winter - maybe I've cooked the viscodrive unit?

Either way, it would be interesting to consider a proper LSD

Think you might have done Nigel - in the current slippy conditions, i'm finding if i give it too much of the loud pedal in a corner it just wants to go straight on as both wheels spin up...

You could get the fluid uprated also as cheaper option. This is done on a lot of other cars.

I have a friend with an MX-5 saying he needed to replace the viscous coupler every 100k km. Viscous fluid is known to degrade over time. For all you BIG BHP guys you should really look into a mechanical LSD (though more aggressive).

I didn't know you could replace the fluid... I would be surprised if you could.

Hi fella's ( and any female members !! ),

Just joined tonight after searching for tuning tips/ideas for my Marea 147 20v.I came across this thread and thought I would add to the discussion.

I bought a Turbo box with a view to fitting it to the Marea for the benefits of the Visco drive, hence to say it's a completely different box and the gears would not be to the Marea's liking anyway rolleyes.

Something good came of it however, as my brother has a 155 V6 with a 156 6 speed box ( fitted with a quaife LSD ) and he wanted to check out the turbo box.

He brought his standard 156 diff and final drive down to mine. I took the diff/final drive out of the turbo box and we checked the teeth on both final drives and they where the same, as was the cast number 7783659. So where the cast numbers on the diffs - 7783660.

So, apparently, a standard Alfa 156 V6 Q2 LSD should fit into the turbo 5/6 speed box .

Hope this helps someone smile

Tonight I've fitted Alfa Q2 on Fiat 20VT 5speed. I'm just looking the way to fit shaft without viscous coupling.

So, if you could figure out the cancelation of Viscodrive then the Q2 LSD fits the 20VT 5speed??

This is a great finding.

I'll try finding some 20V N/A shaft. In case there are the same from the differential to the near shaft then problem is 100% solved. If not, I'm sure there is solution, I read somewhere that some sort of sleeve was made for 20VT to remove viscodrive. I also wonder how much power this Q2 LSD can handle?

Q2 diff is good for around 400bhp and around 300 pounds feet torque from what I have seen and heard in tuning circles.

There are quite a few drive shaft companys that will make you a bespoke drive shaft.
My friend had one made by a company in Luton for his Mk2 Escort cosworth conversion.

300ft/lbs doesn't sound like a massive amount by modern coupe standards (ie there seem to be alot of people running over 300ft/lbs now)

Have there been many failures over 300ft/lbs or is this a (conservative) manufactures rating?

Supposedly its what Alfa "rekon/claim" it can handle.

The KAAZ 1.5 LSD is a better diff to the Q2.

I know someone who had both diffs fitted and he rants and raves about the KAAZ,its the best thing since sliced bread.
