Hi all,

Had my car up for a couple of weeks now (here and Pistonheads). No interest as yet (same as last time I advertised it). I presume its because of the mileage, which is really annoying, as anyone who has seen it knows it's a 'goodun.

So, my question to you is, what price do people think it will sell at? (currently on for £2995). Link to advert:

Secondly, do people think the market might pick up in a few months? I dont think it will, so don't want to hang around before I sell.

Used car prices (especially sporty old ones) are only going one way...not going to increase in value. Do you have it on Pistonheads and Autotrader too?

I have it on PH, but not the AT yet.

What do you think about the price Vicks?

Sounds fair but I fear the mileage *may* put off "normal" buyers

I think anything over 100k and people look elsewhere, the colour is also a bit marmite really, a love or hate thing. It's one of them colours that looks great in the flesh, especially in certain lights (I like the colour btw!) but doesn't come across that well in photo's etc. It's looks like a very nice one to me but they are hard to shift. If you look on auto trader, there are a load of port blue coops, a fair few of them have been on there a long time, one of them since I bought my 16VT in March!
If you can keep it, do. Keep it as a classic/second car, get insurance with limited use and mileage allowance and enjoy it in the fine weather, mothball it over the winter, surely thats better than losing all of your hard work and hard earned cash by selling it any cheaper than it's obviously worth?

£2K if you're lucky. The average numpty of a buyer doesn't care about what's been done on it in the past year...

2nd hand car values are in the toilet at the moment - I'm putting my Skoda on AT for about £500 less than what it might have been worth 6 months ago - and I'll take (a lot) less than what I'm asking to get it shifted.

I have also discovered a recent 'problem' with the Pistonheads website, in that unless you pay the £7 for a premium advert, your free advert goes to the back of the queue. So unless somebody searches through every single one of the 50+ odd Coupes for sale on PH they wont even see the ad......

Re the £7 listing on PH - when I look, I look at all.. Usually sorted by price low to high and you end up with 2 lists, those that paid £7, those that didn't!

Re this car, I will be looking to buy in the not too distant future, and the mileage would put me off. Not because it's high, but because by the time I've put a few miles on it, it's going to be even higher and harder for me to sell, so it's got to be quite cheap to tempt me in.

As for caring about what's been done in the last 12-24 months, I really do care, but I'm not prepared to pay a premium for it. Things like clutches and cambelts MUST be done as maintenance, not to add value. Having these things should make the deal sweeter, not add the value of what they cost.

We recently bought a MK3 golf gti for £700 and have decided to keep it running rather than paying loads to get it mint. If we decide to start making it a minter, then we know it is money wasted, so will decide whether to sell it and break even-ish, or sell it and buy one with the work already done (and a V6 engine and 3 doors :D)

Yes but a full suspension rebuild costing >£2000 is not normal maintenance, and I'm hardly asking for a lot given other cars in inferior condition.

Sorry mate, I thought that might come across as harsh, I'm giving you my view as a prospective buyer. That you've spent £2k is cracking, and makes it a great car, but you can't expect to recoup the cost. Replenishing worn parts is normal maintenance, that you spent £2k is not going to give a prospective buyer sleepless nights.

I've not commented on the price intentionally, as I've only seen them on the internet, I've not viewed to compare.

Well if was trying to recoup the money it would be up for over £6000. I'm asking a smidge over £2500 which is less than I paid for the car a year ago, let alone including any of the money I've spent.

Its sad really. I've got my eye on a really nice BMW. Its done 183,000 miles so I reckon it will still be for sale when my coupe goes

Well the cars been up for £2250 for a while now and still not sold. I'm considering PX at <£1500! Is anybody buying coupes anymore?

I might take mine to a meet and drum up some interest.

Still too rich for me.Shame really as its obvious you have spent a huge amountof money sorting this car out.But,given the current climate most of us buyers now have the vulture mentality.

Scott, for someone spcifically seeking a 'turbo' you are probably right based on the silly prices some people are still asking. I'm not fussy whether its turbo or n/a.
What caught my eye on yours was the amount of work done on it but my budget is (loosely) based on n/a prices so I'm
going to sit back and wait.

A good n/a will probably cost as much as a turbo to buy as they are rarer (and of course, much more desirable )

I'd agree with Vickster - major issue with used car prices. Great for the buyer, not for the seller. Buyer's market. If you can afford it, garage your coop and drive only at weekends to keep the motor in shape. Might be worth a lot more in years to come as coops get rarer. Equally it might not! ;/

as a newcomer to the coop community its interesting to hear these opinions ( all over the forum) on prices, what these cars are 'worth', whether its a 'bargain',why hasn't it sold yet etc etc.
Personally, I think if you love something ( car,house,boat etc)its very difficult to value it objectively in a recession which is why the cars are not selling.
I'm sure the owners I have contacted recently just think I am trying to buy their car on the cheap but from my perspective I'm just being realiastic ,'cheap' doesn't come into it.
I wish we were not in a recession ( and hardly in it yet imo) but we are......................

Well all the best for your hunt for your Coop. Just be patient as it might take a while to find a good one (it did for me and I am sure for lots of the other forum members too).

Have to admit though Warnysouth's Coop looks great and shouldn't be letting it go for less than £2,200.

having the same problem shifting mine...r reg 20vt with few owners, fsh but with high miles but well maintained with all the big jobs done recently...id have thought it was desireable at £1995 ono, i even stated id listen to offers...but i aint had a sniff..not one bite....c'est la vie....way i see it, its no hardship to keep such a beautiful car a wee bit longer, but the makrket for these, and most used cars, is on its arse right now..

my advice..if ya cant get what you want for your car, and you have the luxury of being able to keep it, even as a weekend toy, as i most probably will, dont give it away..you will regret it....
