nahh you gain something when you stop them rotating, but to lock or remove them you only gain the weight as Begbie wrote

When the tensioner broke on mine and the belt came off I tried running it without but it was so different and unpleasant to drive \:\( I guess the engine is somewhat out of balance compared to others.

Why? I would just remove the tensioner as it doesnt do anything without the belt.

Or do you mean you need to lock the balance shaft pulleys?

Yes, sorry, got myself mixed up there.

I believe you can do away with the tensioner and you just lock the balance shafts

Because the engine was out and I thought it would be worth doing :-/

Not true you will also gain extra oli pressure, which i think makes it a worthwhile mod to remove them and block the oilways.

So, how are we locking the shafts guys? I've read Guy Crofts comments and if he's it's OK, who are we to argue with the god of Fiat / Lancia Twin Cam Tuning? He does mention how to do it in that link above but it isn't clear (to me anyway). Anyone done it, if so, any pics or diagrams! I'm driving very cautiously at the moment as my B/Shaft tensioner is on the brink and I'm waiting for a replacement!

Cheers Guys

Well, the belt is off!

All good, car seems to rev a little easier now and the only side effect so far is the idle speed has risen a tiny bit.

Oh, and thanks to PeteP for the last little bit of encouragement I needed to do it. The shafts have not moved at all, then why would they. I will strap them eventually, but as I can't get to the rear one with the engine in, it can wait until the engine is out over the winter.

The tensioner was knackered, totally, although not about to collapse in on itself as the noises it was making would suggest, very worn though, loads of end float and notchy when turned by hand, it's just taken it's place in my dead coupe bits bin!

had a look at that it dont seem to hard to make the end bearing as i work at an engineering firm but would blocking up the oil ways be ok , there is only one feed to each so shorly blocking them up will be fine
