so my parents over insure on everything, so imagine their supprise when they got a phone call off their insurance asking them if they knew that their standard policy didnt include insurance for ANY passengers?
when asked what would happen if a passenger was injured in an accident the answer was they would have to sue my folks directly and it come out of their own pockets.
the company..... Norwich union (the middle man was kwik fit dunno if it makes a difference)
when quizzed more, te perosn on the phone asked my mum to show where on the policy it states that passengers WERE insured, but i dont think i have ever seen this on a policy.
so they are now £30 worse off but at least they are covered.
will be phoning Ensign tomorrow to check mine. Have my folks and i been blissfully unaware and never covered? are Norwich union just cr@p or is this some horrible new thing insuance companies are slipping in to make mroe money?

Sounds like some over zelous sales pitch to me. It might be an option to add passanger cover but i wasn't aware of it.
I would have thought that any passanger was treated like any other third party such as a pedestrian, or another vehicle/driver, and any claim them might have would be made against the 'guilty' parties insurance, be it the insured person they were a passanger of or any other party found to be at blame.
That's just my own thoughts on the matter though

To be honest, the passenger has willingly got into your car, so i dont see how they could sue you anyways, as long as you arent charging them for the service.

This doesn't sound right to me. Third party insurance covers this. The passenger in your car is the 'third party' or any damage you cause to anything or anybody else is the 'third party' - which is why this is the minimum level of cover you are required to take out by law. Also, if a passenger is injured in your car as a result of a collision which is not your fault, they would claim off the insurance of the offending driver to cover their injuries. If it is your fault - they would claim off your insurance.
Seriously sounds like a swizz to try and get your parents to take out extra insurance unnecessarily.

I'd look into the small print at your contents cover, i had a big accident. My car was full of my clothes, full desktop pc, and tools (i'd been on leave for 3 weeks). When it came to making the claim im sure you can imagine my face when they told me i was only insured for up to £100 contents.
