Hi All,

I want to cut my gear stick down and replace the knob. Only problem is that its a 20VT with lift up reverse. Does anyone know a way of getting round this so i dont have a lift up mechanism?

Many Thanks

ah!
that wouldnt have anything to do with a certain red 16v you sat in recently which had a nice short gear lever

Simple - get rid off the reverse-lift like I did

(I try not to rush into 6th gear too much tho )

(1) remove gear knob

Pic 1

Pic 2

(2) remove lift-up reverse mechanism, which on most 20VTS is a black plastic shaft, simply slides vertically off

Pic 3

Pic 4

(3) fit any knob you want, I have a Momo jobby..

Pic 5

trust this helps.....

Good point, with the mechanism removed can you still select reverse or do have to leave part of the mechanism in and wedge it always up?

As the pics clearly show you remove the whole mechasism.
This then allows toy to select any gear at any time. Including reverse at 50+mph

If you want do this mod I suggest you do not let anyone else drive your car unless they are aware that reverse is no longer protected.

Bear in mind though that is done on a MCMike has a full length shaft for the lift up mechanism - if its like mine you cannot remove the whole item.

Ive got a lift up collar about half the length, and the way round it was to fit a replacement collar underneath it (i used one of these;

http://www.lappusa.com/11012description.htm

they should be available from an electrical supplier, and its jut the right size to sit at the top of the gear lever, but not slide down to far (past where the base of the spring would sit).

Then i stuck a very small self tapping screw through the side of this, and attached the lift up cable to this screw, and secured it with a washer. Works a treat!

If anyone is interested ill get some pictures up, but it is useful as it means youre not limited to lift up reverse gear knobs...)

you guys have a different shaft to me
this is mine

you cant simply remove the shaft because the lift reverse is cable operated. this is my mod though many dont seem to like it?

needs a bit of finishing between the knob and collar might make myself a new gaiter too, black leather and sprint bloo stitching.
