I use 215/35/18. Slightly smaller rolling radius.

And I think the correct 17" size would be 215/40/17.

I use 245/35R18 but may need some archwork depending on offset and width (mine is an 8" rim). 245/30R18 will also work with the same caveat. 225/35R18 is a fairly std size to use - I personally would not use 215/35R18.

I would try to get as much sidewall as you can get away with. 225/40R18 is too large from std but it is possible to modify your arches to accept that size.

On 17s 215/45R17 is usually the best option. 225/45R17 is too tall (same as 225/40R18). I used to run 235/40R17 (8" rim) but with an ET30 offset needed a little archwork, and you can also get 245/40R17 (8"+ rim) to fit as well

I have 215/35/18s all round.

The front pair are Falken FK452 and the rears are Nankang NS2.

The Falkens look stretched over the wheel, the sidewall is not vertical, but the Nankangs, despite being exactly the same size, have a vertical sidewall and look good \:\?

225 Falkens all round next time I think.

I run 225/40r18 and i have not had to roll any of my arches. They fit inside the arch at the back fine and my fronts are on h&s 20mm hubcentric spacers which also fit fine.
The offset of my wheels are about et40 so probaby why i can fit them.
I do get abit of rubbing from the back when i have passengers in but then its only over big bumps (good excuse not to have passengers in the back \:\) ) My fronts just touch on full lock when going backwards (but its only just) but i needed to modify the plastic shield at the front, so they didn't rub when going forwards (took some slats out).

I went for this size as i didn't want rubber bands \:\) they have alot better ride then 35's

sounds about right to me, the rubbing is stuff that a lot of people wouldn't be happy with. If you hit a huge bump 4 up at 80mph that is likely to turn into blowing out a tyre

I don't take 4 people in my car anymore (not much room for them anyway) The tyre only just touches the plastic shield at the back when going over a big big bump if i did carry 4 people. This is my second set of tyres on the car and so far no damage. I don't really drive that fast over the speed limit anymore as too many camara's.

If a tyre can withstand hitting some nasty potholes (which would deform the tyre and sidewall in a split second) in our crappy roads then i am sure they can withstand a little touch of plastic. But i do understand what your saying, but don't want to go to 35's.

This is an interesting thread guys. I'm currently using 225/35/18 on Azevs (which are an 8.5" rim). I had the rear arches rolled and am now seriously considering the modifactions required to get 225/40/18s on. I'm already running bilsteins and eibachs but a better ride and cheaper tyres are a must!

John S - what tyre choice should I go for in your opinion?

If it is cost I would go 225/40R18. The bit of the arch you might have to fold is at the bottom of the rear next to the pinin badge and you may need to cut back the end edge of your LE skirt there as well. It's because when you compress the rears the wheel goes upwards and forwards.
If you have a rear zender skirt (which I doubt you will have) you will need to cut and shut that so it is flush with the arch line

On the fronts if your arch liners are in the right place you may have to cut back the grilles in them or let the tyre do it over time \:D If they're just hanging out then the tyre might rip them out if you're not careful.

With 225/40R18 your speedo will read about 3% lower than reality I would guess.

Offset makes a big difference on how large a tyre you can get away with.
On the front the best thing to do is put it on full lock with your current tyre and measure bearing in mind the wear on your tyre. Look at the difference in radius of the two and then you can work out whether they will fit or how much they won't fit by.
Apparently the clearance gets tighter with the car jacked up slightly btw (not that you are likely to be going over a high speed bump at full lock)

Thank you John S. A very informative answer as always. I'm currently paying about £135 for each 225/35/18. I've already had the rear arches rolled professionally so I 'might' be ok.

PM me your email address and I'll send you a spreadsheet that will calculate your rolling radius before and after - just pop in the wheel and tyre size (thanks to Julain from BMS for that originally.)

dont use 215/35/18 on a 16vt/20vt ! these tires got a load index of 84 (500kg) but the turbo coop need over 525kg per tire (li 86). in other words: the coop is to heavy for these tires !!

I needed mine doing since my car is lowered on eibachs and possibly because my wheels are 8.5" wide. Who ever said that size didn't matter?

225/35-18 is exactly std wheelsize, if it rubs then the ET is out. One will have to remember 18" will never be comfy..

are 205 35 17 too narrow? I have been running them for a while and find a lack in latteral roll i guess from the lower profile but they seem quite narrow compared to other sizes quoted here.

I don't think the ET is out the AZEVs were made for the car and the car had a full 4 wheel allignment at Elite.

The tyre stretches over the 8.5" rim IIRC.

Azev use ET30 usually. But in the UK one of the suppliers gets blanks and machines them to spec. It isn't like in Germany where the fitment has to be TUV approved.

and what you say to this compilation:

9x17 wheelsize (possibly ET30) and 245/35 tyres round?

is this possible without an intervention?
