Not a silly question at all \:\)

They come off exactly the same way as a standard strut would come off the top mount probably even easier as you wont have to use spring compressors.

Wind the spring platform all the way down to the bottom so the springs are loose.
Then its safe to undo the 19mm top nut inside the top mount. The damper will then just pull out of the top mount as a standard one would.

If your replacing the top mounts, make sure the FK bearing race comes out of the old top mount as it may stick in it, oh and its a good time to clean and grease the bearing too \:\)

But there is the allen'd inside rod with the nut on. When i try to undo the nut the rod just turns! thought about holding it with mole grips but I'm worried I'll damage it °\(

Have started making some worried knocking noises over this week from front drivers coilover. Sounds a bit like its going to rattle off.... although it stops under braking \:\(

Sigh!

So you wanna know how to get the nut of the top mount?

Get an 18mm socket and grind flats onto two side so you can hold it with a set of mole grips. Put the socket on the nut then place the allen key through the middle into the top of the strut. Hold the allen key and turn the nut (mole grips/socket) anti-clockwise to undo. Once it’s cracked then it should come off easily. Sometimes easier to do this with them still on the car, but not essential.

Update:

Well that went really well! \:D

No more horrible noises \:\) took apart all the top bearings etc and blasted out any crap with brake cleaner (rightly or wrongly) liberally re greased and put it all back together with new topmounts. yay!

A wee question tho...

The plate the bearings run on is looking a bit like the bearings where corroded to it... Is it something to worry about?

Thanks

Al
