It's because of the old Astra's The red top ones were 16v, as compared to the older 8v ones. A few years ago, anyone that did a 'red top' conversion was a God and had all the power in the world Oooooh, it's a red top oooooh, was the saying Maybe he thinks Coupes are the same

dikkks Does that mean my blue rocker cover won't give me an extra 50bhp when I get it on the rollers? These powder coating firms are right cowboys - I wouldn't have done it otherwise.

I used to have a red top engine in a Westfield, they're quite a nice engine, 2.0 NA 16v, produced a reliable 230bhp. Cost a lot to build though. There are plenty of them about so the cost of the engine is quite cheap to start with.
A standard red top better than a standard 20vt though, please?!!!

it is possible, a friend runs one in his rally car, don't know what he has done to it, still running EFI and is putting out 180-190bhp!! run on throttle bodies and other nice bits they can make over 200bhp quite easily apparently.

Surely all carl needs is a can of red spray and a metal stamp marked "Red Top Compatible" and he can charge a premium (with the aid of the can of spray or a hammer) for "red top" parts. I was thinking that reading CarlTs post. I'd have a special box of red painted stuff for the muppet and rinse him dry! Seriously, sell a few bits on EBay advertised as such and we'll all have a look at the comments/ questions!
F****** b****** thing...

230bhp from a nasp redtop! surely not!??? Very possible, but it costs a lot - overbored to just under 2.2, accralite pistons, oversized valves, flowed head, very wild cams, throttle bodies, equal length exhaust manifold etc. It was a very reliable engine when it was built, it took a lot of abuse but was looked after and survived many track days and many road miles, can't fault it and it sounded awesome on the tb's They struggled to rr it as the westfield was hard to strap down, combined with the fact it had no weight and harsh power delivery, I think I was hated at that rr! Stock they are 150bhp, same as Fiats 2.0 16v, Alfa's TS. Similar levels of power are available from them following the same route, it just costs more to tune the Italian NA stuff to that level.

very true, i have the inferior ecotec engine in my astra 2.0 sport and at about 4000rpm you can feel and hear the second cam come in, probably why it uses more fuel than the coupe, mostly it is over 4000rpm!!! would make a great road rally car, tempted but not enough funds

To get over 200bhp from a 2 lr N/a engine is very, very difficult. Even then you still have to think about it having crappy idle with nutty cams etc.

Older Super tourers put out about 320-330 bhp like the honda accords, Nissan Primeras when they all had dry sumps. Rich
