i know it seems a popular topic on here with many threads all dodging the question. so. is it possible to fit a momo non lift reverse gear knob to the coupe whilst maintaining the mechanism? im sure with some modifying it will work ie cut the top off the collar that goes up inside the gear knob? the question is has anybody actually done it?

not all of the collar. the bit that goes up inside the gear knob above the bit you use to hang on to to lift the reverse in the first place........if you see what i mean?

If you did cut the collar off, that means your'll have to pull the sleeve up to select reverse.

Oh see what you mean. But personally think that would look crap cos your'll see the bit of the shaft between the gear knob and sleeve.

I'm sure someone on here has done this as the lift up mechanism is only there to stop you accidentally engaging reverse gear whilst moving.
I think.

The gear stick goes into a non lift & reverse gear knob alot further than a lift & reverse. It will fit but your'll have to chop quite a bit of the sleeve down, or a centre bit to keep the collar.

if you take it off completely you will find the lever goes over to the right too much making it a pain to find 5th fast

Seeing as my lift reverse mechanism doesn't work, i reckon it would work fine on my coupe.

But, seriously, i think you can remove the lift-reverse mechanism from the gear linkage quite easily.

different models use different techniques. some have a cable i believe, mine is just a plastic boot on the end of the shaft that lifts. hence the ease in which i modded mine

Not so sure about that ebay gear knob. The seller has no feedback and doesn't accept paypal. He might be a genuine guy but I would send my money off.

In regards to the fitting keep any progress posted as I want a new knob also.

well chaps, after a few days in budapest im chilled enough to attempt the operation. just cut the top off and the gear knob almost fits !!! im bobing it at the mo but am off to halfrauds to get some araldite. the centre section of the shaft has to go so im thinking cut and shut but replace weld with araldite . if it goes well ill post a how to, and if it goes tits up ill be on here later looking for a spare collar
wish me luck

well i did it!!!!
fitted in about 2 hours and all went really well. will post a 'how to'. also found a great way to get the origonal gear knob off. get an adjustable spanner and open it so it fits under the gear knob then..... belt the underneath with a large hammer until it pops off and you still have a usable gear knob. ill get the whole thing up when i load up the pictures to my pc
thanks for all the help

I look forward to reading the "how to" and seeing the pics. Nothing beats the heart starting to go when you do something like chop a gear leaver and then can't go back, but in the end all is well and the risk pays off .

so here we have one lift reverse from my 20vt.
[url=http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d96/staffordsalon/10022006.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d96/staffordsalon/10022006.jpg
to get the gear knob off read up a few posts, it really is worth it as you dont have to destroy the origonal. cut thetop section off using a dremmel or similar and clean up using a sanding attachment
[url=http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d96/staffordsalon/10022006002.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d96/staffordsalon/10022006002.jpg
then for the leap of faith cut out the section inbetween the lift section and the nobbly bit at the bottom. see the removed section here, to the left, with the two other pieces waiting to be glued back together
[url=http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d96/staffordsalon/10022006003.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d96/staffordsalon/10022006003.jpg
after some liberal araldite and a hot radiator this is what you should end up with
[url=http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d96/staffordsalon/10022006006.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d96/staffordsalon/10022006006.jpg
clean up any swarf and re-grease then refit. refit the gaitor and position gearknob et voila
[url=http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d96/staffordsalon/10022006008.jpg

remove the image part off the end then they will be okay. personally i would do as i did and hide the lot under the gaiter as it look neater. same idea though

Craig why did you not just remove the collar and weld the wire onto the shaft? surely it would look alot better without the collar and just have the gaitor upto the gear knob ?

MMmm..personally I'm sorry to have to say I don't like it.
Good on you for giving it a go but agree with ajg, it would all look neater under a gaitor.
Why not shorten the gear stick about 3 inches if you can and fit a nice soft leather gaitor with frame, then it would look outstanding.
