Does anyone know what the standard 20vt ECU can handle with regards to boost?

In terms of boost spikes around 1.3-1.4 bar but for sustained boost not more than 1.1 bar.

IIRC, fuel cuts at 1.5 bar, but unless you've spent a good few quid on allowing your engine to take that much boost, you're heading for meltdown very soon. The standard turbo would deliver 1.5 bar, but only for a fairly short time in the 3,000 - 5,000 rpm range. When my wastegate broke on my standard turbo, I saw a peak of 1.8 bar (but only once - I didn't dare risk it again)

The standard ECU has fuel maps up to about 1.5 bar, but as Nigel says it cuts fuel and boost beyond 1.5bar as part of a safety feature.
For the price, if you are going to run higher than standard ,even slightly ,you are better off with a Novitec/G-Tec style chip with fuelling maps up to 1.8bar+, of course the standard turbo and intercooler are only really good for short bursts at 1.2bar

Remember the standard intercooler should only be able to handle around 1.2 bar anyway - due to the plastic endtanks.

Thanks for the info, will be getting a chip eventually, but was just looking for a short term boost, won't be going mad. Not just yet anyway!!

GrahamL sells the Gtech1 chip for £35 (i think) which gives about 25-30bhp & lbs of torque, and adjusts the timing & fuelling too.
You can use it in conjunction with a bleed valve (instead of the EBV) @ 1.2bar for an impressive derestriction over standard.
But fit a boost gauge first & recommend a RR to check fuelling.

That sounds pretty good already got a boost gauge fitted. Is it a remap? or a chip that I could change myself as I'm up in North Scotland.

Simple plug n play. PM GrahamL and he'll send you the link to his installation guide.

I'm running Barbz MD370 Super Spool Hybrid turbo with the Standard chip (only 1.0bar at the moment with my Blitz). I am off to the Surrey Rolling road this Saturday to check that the Std chip will fuel fine at 1.1bar. (Which is all I intend to run for the foreseeable future, being on engine No.2) I will soon have a Pace WMIC fitted as well but I know even this will struggle with temps at 1.2bar due to its size and location, (but it still seemed a bargin at £115 )

If they say I'm a little on the lean side with this setup then I also have a Gtec1 chip which I will re-fit whilst there, (but then I know I'll be tempted to turn the boost up further )

Chris

We maybe splitting hairs but...

Its interesting that a lot of folk quote this boost limit, but the 20VT ECU doesnt measure boost anywhere, and there is no boost sensor. Boost level is inferred from the MAF and throttle position sensor outputs. That being the case the ECU cant contain any maps for an actual boost level at all. Its more of the case that typically 1.5bar is the level of boost that is generated before the MAF and TPS outputs read max and therefore the fuel is cut at this point.

Perhaps Graham can clarify once and for all as this one keeps coming up and it would be good to understand it fully.
