I took the coop in to a bodyshop this afternoon to get a quote to take out a scrape the girlfriend put in the rear panel. As I was there I thought I'd get the black bits done. And the stone chips on the bonnet. In fact why not respray the whole thing. £2,000. Booked in for end of month.

Have I done the right thing?

The car cost me £4k 5 months ago, since then I've spent £2,500 on mechanicial bits, and now more cost on the way.

You won't unfortunately ever get the money back...how many miles has the car done and what is the spec...4k seems to be the going rate for a better than average 'normal' 20vt, with leather and ac

If it's mechanically mint and you intend on keeping it for more than 2 years I'd say yes, it is worth it, as long as you can afford it. How much was it to take the scrape out by itself?

I don't think you'll get much of that cash back when you come to sell but you will have a very tidy example which will go for a top end price, and in the meantime you will have a mint coup which shouldn't need anything spending on it apart from consumables.

It's done 70k..normal 20vt, ac and leather.

Mechanically it's perfect, so I'm thinking that if it's just consumables and I keep it for some time (as I love it) then it's worthwhile.

Surely as the current oversupply of uncared for examples dries up then we will see prices stabilise?

I'd want a very very good job indeed for £2k.....I've heard people get quotes for colour changes from reputable garages for less than that!

Don't bother. Within a couple of weeks some numpty will probably opened their door onto it, or it'll somehow get scratched/scraped in a carpark.

If i could afford it i'd go for it.

I hate seeing mine with minor scuffs/stone chips. Though saying that, its near on impossible keeping your car free from scratches, car park dings and scuffs if its a daily driver.

Sorry. I'm getting it done in Basildon.
I've had excellent work done there before.
(newbridge in the Burnt mills estate)

Last time I was in they were doing a sludge green ferrari 456....

Apparently there might be an issue with taking the windows out and them breaking...or is this rubbish.

£2K is a hell of a lot of money for a respray... Max £1200-1300 and I would want perfection in that amount of money...

But hey ... not my cash

I haven't tried removing the windows in mine but looking at the service manual it looks tricky but not impossible. They certainly shouldn't break them doing it.

I think you'll have a long wait, with this kind of car: 5 years? 10 years before prices start heading upwards?

If you've still got your Coupe by then, the 'new' paint will be 5-10 years old and there'll be lots more nice cars around for the same money (Perhaps one of those 8-year old 2008 Fiat Coupes)

I'd say, if you're keeping the car for a while and new paint makes you happy then £2k is worth it, but you won't get it back.

Just get the side done with the damage circa £300, 2k on a coop for a respray is asking for your trousers to be ripped down. Lesson learnt dont give women your car.

iv been quoted £1500 for a similar amount of work so it sounds about right, this still wont be a total strip down at that price but it includes fixing dings, rust, damage and some panel replacement. ask to pay cash and u wont get stung for the vat, most paint shops do this!...also see what sort of warrenty you get on it

on my way too work i usually view a really nice old BMW that has been tatsfully modified and has some deep dish wheelz and about 1 month ago it was resprayed and wow it looks smart. today i walk past and there is a bloody great ding in the door .........this wont stop you having a respray but be prepared for your heart to break.

This is about right for a good quality job. I'm getting 5 panels, a rusty light ring and a dent done for £1200.
I've seen his work on an old Maserati and I couldn't believe the quality. With painting you really get what you pay for unless you've got a mate who'll do it for mate's rates.

i agree that £2k is fair BUT ONLY if they really do a perfect job.

too many bodyshops sont spray the roof, instead just mop it which whilst acceptable in most cases, for £2k id want EVERY panel full prepared, sanded down, and primer, paint and lacquer.

ive seen £1k resprays and for that money the usually spray the bumpers whilst on the car, with overspray just about everywhere.

just be sure that for £2k you are getting perfection, as once they have done it you end up arguing with them if it isnt right.

oh and my personal opinion on your car ben? dont bother re-spraying. get the bits that need doing done, perhaps fit some skirts and colour code the black bits, then with the rest of the money invest in some good brakes, suspension and possibly a unichip and roller bearing turbo to join the 300bhp+ club.

Thanks for all your opinions!

I'm having it re-done in Sprint Blooo...(as it's the best colour)

I am certain they will do an excellent job...they are all lifetime bodyshoppers, no YTS trainee types..

If it looks anywhere as good as frary's one in his sig, I think it's worth it.

With regard to the front and back screens....they were worried that they might break if they took them out for a perfect job...anyone had this problem? They could mask it, but said it wouldn't be as good...are screens on the endangered list too, like bonnets?

Cheers,
Ben.

Oh, and Rog, don't worry, once the Tarox are on, it's in the budget for FMIC, GT28RS, 18" wheels and a Unichip....surely that's obvious?

yeh forget the paintjob, not worth it.

If there gonna leave the windows thats not good.

Tidy it up, if you make it perfect it will only get marked.

I went down that route with a perfect bare shell colour change to a one off colour, was about 3 weeks work, just sold it and was keyed up in 1 week!

All ruined now!

Cheap re-sprays aren't worth it. There's a red 20vt for sale in a Dublin dealers (6 months now) with 100k miles and the world's worst re-spray. Saw the car before they 'did it up' and it wasn't too bad..looked what you'd expect from a 9 year old 100k. Bodgyshop did the paint in the wrong colour (red is apparently a s*d to match anyway)without masking it properly so its got overspray on 3 tyres, on the windscreen and windows. The paint is so thin the stone chips on the bonnet show right through and its done in a tasty shade of 'Pikey's tarts lipstick red'

Nice work boys!

Went to a fiat approved bodyshop and they mentioned the same thing about the rear windows. Someone on here mentioned that they can be taken out using one of those army wire cutting things (they a peice of wire with two rings at each end). There is a also a removal guide in the manual.

Not sure about the front window.

any chance of getting the paint code for that colour?

2K is a heck of a wedge to be spending on a respray, especially with the recent posts about attcks on coops and parking dings. A quick mop might be a safer, cheaper option?
